The town grew quickly and soon had a school, jail, and several businesses. In 1851, there were only 10 residents in Oak Forest; by 1860, there were over 100 residents. By 1870, Oak Forest had a courthouse, shops and services for its citizens, as well as a hospital. The town continued to grow throughout the 1800s and into the1900s thanks to its rich resources and growing economy.

Oak Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located in the northwest corner of the county and is bordered to the east by Chicago and to the west by Plainfield. As of the 2010 census, Oak Forest had a population of 5,531. The community was first settled in 1836 by Ebenezer Oak and his wife Rebecca Birch. The community was named after an oak tree that grew near the original settler's home. The name stuck, and residents continue to call themselves "Oak Forestters" today. The first store in Oak forest opened its doors on December 15th 1836. At that time there were just four families living here. In 1840, Ebenezer Oaks son Isaiah bought a farmstead which included current day Maple Lawn property across from present day Elmhurst Elementary School. Isaiah's farmstead became one of the most important sites in early Village history as it housed both public schools (Elementary) as well as his own private academy for school children until 1914 when it closed down due to financial troubles. This provided many opportunities for young students who could not afford private schools or parents who could not afford tuition at public schools like Elmhurst Elementary which still stands today! Additionally during this time period Isaiah also donated land along with other properties to form what is now known as village square back then! This area would later become known as downtown Oak Forest! Katharine Swenson who lived near us while attending Roosevelt High School stated “There wasn’t anything like this back then- things were more simple and everyone got along better because we knew each other so well” Another resident Katharine said about their days here “It was quite a bit different than now where people all move away and leave their homes behind” When looking back on her childhood she says that growing up here made her appreciate life more since she felt connected to everyone here especially those close to her… even if they were far away! She continues “Your family or friends are always around you no matter what – whether you are playing outside or inside”today our village square still retains much of its old-fashioned feel with vegetable gardens,, antique shops,,and 2 post office buildings
Oak Forest was a small village in the county of Kane, Illinois, United States. The population was 432 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1879 by local farmers as a small community on a parcel of land that they had purchased from the state of Missouri. The name "Oak Forest" is derived from the trees that were used to build the settlement. The first post office opened in 1880 and was known as Maple Grove. In 1886, Oak Forest became part of the city of Chicago after being annexed by its predecessor, Maywood. In 1932, Oak Forest became one of twelve villages merged into the new town of Homestead Heights west of Chicago. The merger resulted in an increase in population to 1,813 residents and made Oak Forest one of its largest towns withinChicago limits at that time.
