Oak Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,158 at the 2010 census. Oak Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Oak Forest was incorporated on November 1, 1892. Oak Forest was founded by John Wirt and his brother-in-law George Prentice in 1873 as a small farming community on the north side of Chicago. In 1875, they moved to what is now the southeast corner of Fullerton Avenue and Ashland Street in Oak Forest and began to build a home that still stands today: Wirt House. They were also one of the first landowners along Fullerton Avenue to install streetlights. In 1897, the village became an unincorporated community when it merged with neighboring Fullerton Township to form Cook County.[1] On April 14, 1907,[2] Cook County commissioners voted 6–3 to annex most of Willowbrook Township (now parts of Elmhurst and Gurnee) into Oak Forrest Village so that all residents would be within one municipality for voting purposes;[3][4] this annexation created much tension between Willowbrook Township residents who wanted more autonomy and officials who said it made more sense for everyone to live together under one roof. The annexation was rescinded after public protest from Willowbrook Township residents concerned about loss of their independent character and potential loss of jobs in downtown Chicago due to increased congestion within the new municipality. On October 15th 1912, Mayor James Hickey awarded $10,-ora from city funds towards excavating land for a new courthouse which would replace an aging structure on State Street in downtown Chicago which had been built during World War I but had become obsolete due to changes in government since then. The cornerstone for construction was laid by Mayor Hickey on December 2nd 1913 with county Judge John Larkin officiating.[5][6][7][8] The new courthouse served as the town's courthouse until 1972 when it closed because its replacement was funded by state coffers instead of through property taxation like other county courthouses which gave citizens more say over how their money was used.[9] Two years later on June 9th 1915,[10][11] full control over Oak Forrest Village passed fromFullerton Township trustees back into hands of elected officials when trustees failed or refused to pass resolutions approving annexation into neighboring Willowbrook Township;[12][13][14][15] following this event full control reverted back once again back over elected officials' shoulders until 2003 when township trustees took complete ownership once again giving them authority not just over electoral vote but also financial resources albeit with some restrictions set forth by township board members themselves such as no referendum or vote upon major decisions necessary for governing purposes unlike other municipalities where these powers are vested solely with elected officials
