Oak Forest, Illinois is a small town located in the central part of the state of Illinois. The population was 8,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest is named after an oak tree that stands on a hill in town. The first settler in Oak Forest was John Atkins who built his home on the banks of the Des Plaines River in 1784. The community soon grew and became known for its high quality apples, which were exported to other parts of the United States. In 1868, Mr. and Mrs. Aiken donated land to build a school but it never opened because they died before it could be finished. In 1899, Mrs. Verenice Kostelnik offered to donate $5,000 to help build a new school which would serve Oak Forrest residents as well as those living near by on Long Island Sound. The money was raised and construction began on what would become Oak Forest High School; this building still stands today! In 1927, Mr. and Mrs. Gertrude Pritzker donated land to create a park that would include baseball diamonds, playgrounds and a swimming pool; this property now includes downtown Oakforest shopping center! Mr./Ms Pritzker also funded several renovations to allow for more useable space inside their donation so that greater numbers of people could use it for educational purposes instead of just storage! In 1984-1985, Msgr./Mrs Pritzker funded two major additions - an addition for band/chorus rehearsal space and an addition for science labs! These projects allowed Oak Forest Elementary students increased access to resources they may not have otherwise had! Today, all public schools within walking distance are run by district staff using funds from these donations!
