Oak Forest is named for an oak tree that grow in the community. The Oak Forest School District is one of twenty-four districts in Cook County, Illinois. The district has an enrollment of 9,633 students and offers kindergarten through eighth grade education. The local newspapers are "The Village Voice" and "Chicago Tribune". Oak Forest was founded by immigrants from Hungary in 1847 as a farmstead on the west side of Chicago adjacent to what is now Wicker Park. In 1868, John Fenton donated land to build a school and village here. In 1870, four families purchased land comprising present-day Oak Forrest from Fenton for $600 each. By 1875, there were nine homes in the village and four schools: one public school and three private schools operated by individual citizens or groups of citizens (the first school being built at what is now Washington Park).

Oak Forest is located on the east side of Chicago and is bordered by the towns of Irving Park to the north, Maywood to the south, and Hinsdale to the west. It has a downtown area that includes a library and several businesses. The first people who lived in what is now Oak Forest were Native American settlers from central Wisconsin who arrived during the 1810s. They named their land Indian Town because they thought it resembled an Indian lodge or village. In 1831, President James K. Polk purchased much of northwest Cook County from Pembroke Township for $2,000 cash. He named this new county after his wife – Sarah Louisa Polk – since she had played a significant role in helping him win office as president of the United States. In 1834, two brothers founded what would become one of Chicago's most important transportation companies: The Great Western Railway Company (GWRC). GWRC helped makeChicago its commercial center by providing transportation for goods and passengers along routes including State Street and Lake Shore Drive. The company also built oak trees as part of its marketing strategy; customers could enjoy free wooden boxes filled with food provided they bought enough tickets per day! In 1865, when Oak Forest became a city, many residents chose to move there because it offered more opportunities for economic activity than their rural homes back home. Businesses such as dry goods stores and breweries quickly grew up in Oak Forest due to its location near railroads and easy access to markets outside of Chicago. By 1899, over 60% of all oak tree production in Cook County took place within reach of Oak Forrest! During World War II many workers from Oak Forrest went into service within Chicago's wartime manufacturing industries such as shipbuilding and aircraft production; many soldiers returned home with injuries that required long-term care in hospitals like Cook County General Hospital until their recovery was possible." TodayOak Forrest remains an economically vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its rural roots; some notable businesses still operate today including Jardin & Co., which sells produce directly to customers; Gilded Cage Theatre Company presents plays throughout the year at venues like Art Institute Auditorium; local artists often reactivateold workshops Worcester Arts Center offers classes/Gallery tours/flowers baskets etc.; numerous churches offer services including Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (built 1904), First Baptist Church (1890), Presbyterian church (1901), Lutheran church (1902) among others."
Oak Forest was first settled in 1833 by John and Deborah Oak. The town was named after the oak trees that were found there. In 1835, the first school was built in the town. The town developed around a courthouse, physician's office, jail, post office and other businesses. In 1872, Oak Forest became a village. The village had a library, social hall and two churches. In 1946, the village merged with nearby Kankakee to form Oak Forest-Kankakee Township.
