The target was a large wooden ship that could be hit with cannon balls. It was not until 1906 that Oak Forest became home to one of the first steel-framed gun targets in America. The target, which was located on West Broadway, served as a training ground for local police officers and other emergency responders. In 1975, thanks to a donation from Mrs. Laddie Hargrave, one of Oak Forest’s most famous citizens made history when she donated her estate’s entire arsenal—including over 150 cannons and pistols—toOak Forrest Municipal Park. today, Gun Targets offers visitors an opportunity to experience this unique aspect of Oak Forest history firsthand.

It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the towns of Park Ridge to the north, Maywood to the east, RiverNorth to the south, and Cicero to the west. The Oak Forest community was founded in 1854 by Captain John Fenton as an agricultural outpost on a tract of land that had been sold by his predecessor as owner of what is now called "Fenton's Prairie" near present-day Elmhurst. In 1865, when Captain George Haggerty took over as head Tory farmer in Ford Township (now Park Ridge), he organized a township meeting and voted to name Oak Forest after himself and donate one acre for each inhabitant. In 1872 captain Isaac Newton merged Ford Township with Oak Forest Township (renaming it Newtonville) making Oak Forrest one of two townships within Cook County. In 1903Captain Julius Hoffman organized another township - Calumet - within Cook County but it never gained official recognition because Hoffman died before it could be formed. According to the 2010 census there are 2,813 people living in Oak Forrest village limits: 1,953 residents in Village Center (the incorporated portion of town), 527 residents in unincorporated portions of village limits including parts of River North and Cicero Heights, 113 residents who live outside village boundaries on hilly or rural property totaling 615 souls generally considered "outside" or "non-village" residents; 3 cars/households per 1000 inhabitants; 2% unemployment rate

In 1847, three brothers - Jacob, Wilhelm and Friedrich - bought land northeast of Oak Forest from a group of Native Americans for $5 per acre. They began to build log cabins and named their new community after an oak tree they saw nearby on their walks around the area. The first post office was established in 1852, and soon afterwards there were several stores, churches and other businesses located in the village center. In 1865, residents voted to change their name to Oak Forest because it sounded more like home than "Germantown." One important aspect of earlyOakForest history is the role played by women (and later men) in the community-building process. Many women served as leaders or trustees throughout most of the village's history; some even worked together with male counterparts to create some key institutions such as schools and churches. This cooperative spirit helped make Oak Forest one of America's earliest "gender-equal" towns – until recently this phrase still held true within many American villages today! In recent years, however, there have been increasing efforts to revive old cultural traditions within Oak Forrest through events like music festivals and art exhibits (most notably a recent retrospective on Pioneer Woman Alice Paul). These initiatives help nurture old values while also extending credit back into our past – something that truly underscores how special it is that we've retained so much cultural heritage from long ago!
