Oak Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 283 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest is bordered by Will County to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, and Kane County to the south. The community was founded in 1872 as a result of land purchases from three families who had purchased duplicate parcels of land along the Chicago River. The first post office in Oak Forest was established in 1875. The local paper, "The Daily News", was published for only one year before it was replaced by "The Tribune". In 1876, entrepreneur John Prentice built what became known as Prentice's Mill on what are now State Street and Winthrop Avenue. By 1879, there were 10 businesses operating in Oak Forrest with a total payroll of $1,500. In 1881, Mayor George Biddle organized a parade through downtown Oak Forrest to celebrate America's centennial birthday. This event is considered to be one of the most important civic events during that time period because it demonstrated how much township residents cared about their city-dwellers neighboring them on both sides of the river. The Village of Oak Forest was incorporated on December 1, 1892. At its incorporation it had a population of 5 people and consisted only of a few acres near what is now the central business district of Oak Forest. However, within five years it had grown to over 100 people and by 1912 had annexed the neighboring community of Deer Park. In 1920, Oak Forest voters passed an ordinance allowing for single-family homes to be built on communal land owned by all residents rather than being sold separately to individual homeowners. This decision helped make possible the rapid growth that has characterized much of Oak Forrest's history – from just 10 residents in 1920 to more than 4,000 by 1930. Today, Oak Forrest remains an economically vibrant community with close ties to Chicago – home to many high-tech companies and major employers such as Northwestern Mutual Financial Corporation and Time Warner Cable – while also enjoying a wide range of recreational opportunities including several golf courses and miles-long lakefront parkland. In addition to its rich cultural heritage – including one developed specifically for African Americans –Oak Forrest has become well known for its delicious apple orchards which bring in $2 million per year in revenue alone (the largest orchard in Cook County).
The Oak Forest community of about 1,000 people was founded in 1868 by pioneers from Illinois. The community grew because of the railroad and other investments that connected it to larger markets. The town prospered until the late 1800s, when a series of natural disasters caused declines in trade and population. A new generation of entrepreneurs revived the town in the 1920s and 30s, but again there were setbacks due to World War II and other challenges. In recent years, Oak Forest has experienced growth thanks to its status as a bedroom community for Chicago.
