Oak Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,916 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northwest corner of Cook County. The name Oak Forest comes from the oak trees that line the streets and driveways in the town. The first settlers to Oak Forest were farmers who started out on a farm near present-day Elmhurst. They used to go there for wood to make charcoal for their homes and cook food. In 1854, they built a cabin on what is now State Route 22 east of town and named it "Oak Forest". In 1875, they built a school which was renamed "Oak Forest High School" in 1907. On December 12, 1909, Oak Forest became part of the city of Chicago through an act of the Illinois General Assembly. At that time, it had a population of 1,500 people and was organized as a precinct within Cook County's Third Ward division (now Kane County). On July 14, 1916, Oak Forrest became an independent municipality with its own government under the name "Oak Forrest". It was annexed by Chicago on January 1, 1947. In 1970s and 1980s there were several attempts to rename or change businesses names due to concerns about racism in America towards African Americans; one attempt led to lawsuits between two business owners who objected to being called "African American Businesses Inc." In 1984-85 Mayor Richard Juhasz recommended changing all businesses' names starting with 'O' so as not to offend any Native Americans living in or near Oak Forrest; however this proposal met fierce opposition from many residents especially since most businesses continued using their original names unchanged until after Juhasz's death in 1987 (). Oak Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It lies on the north side of Chicago, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of the city center. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. Oak Forest is one of five towns in Cook County that are part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The other four towns are Hinsdale, Lombard, Glen Ellyn and Westchester. The first people to live in what is now Oak Forest were the Potawatomi Indians. In 1836, entrepreneur Nicholas Clark founded a lumber company there and named itClark & Clark Lumber Company. In 1847, another business owner named James Wickersham established a grocery store there and called it Wickersham's grocery store. By 1857, Oak Forest had two churches: First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1862 when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States, he decided to run for office in Illinois and traveled to Springfield to campaign against rival candidate Stephen Douglas. When he got back to Chicago he took up residence at his old home on State Street across from Union Station where he continued to reside until his death in 1865. On November 3rd 1861 John Pemberton organized a group of settlers who had come overland from Indiana led by Captain George Stephenson with ideas about forming their own township because they felt that they needed more than one place to farm and build homes due to growing population density within Cook County during this time period as well as overcrowding inside some government buildings such as county jails which were not fit for human occupancy anymore due to overcrowding . On January 1st 1863Captain Stephenson's group approved an application for township status from three men who became known as "The Founders" - John Pemberton (founder), Simon Cameron (founder),and Solomon Lowden (founder). With this approval new township status was granted on February 15th 1863to all those present at the meeting plus 10 more settlers who had applied for it since January 1st when itsordinance went into effect... These pioneers included many Russian immigrants who were among the largest contingentof Europeans living in America at this time... opposition soon arose from locals who felt their village would be destroyed by newcomers while boosters argued thatthetown should become eligible for tax breaks offered by state governmentbased on its size As expected however few residents moved into township until after Captain Stephenson's death in 1865 when most officials moved out including Postmaster General David Davis because they believedhe could handle things better than anyone else given his prior experience with government service Today oak forest stands as an unincorporated community located withinCook County just off I-95 near Lemont IL
