The town was named for the oak trees that were present on its original site. Oak Forest's first post office was established in 1851. In 1865, it became the county seat of Cook County. During World War I, Oak Forest served as a military camp for American troops stationed in France. After the war ended, the camp was abandoned and gradually disappeared from memory until it was discovered again in 1984 when archaeologists excavating at a nearby golf course found evidence of buildings and infrastructure dating back to the early 1800s. The discovery caused much excitement because it supported reports that Oak Forest had been an important center during Illinois' early period of settlement. The history of Oak Forest began with its founders who were two brothers, John and Anna Oak. John had come to America from England in 1799 and he married Anna Cushman on July 14th, 1802 at Mount Holyoke College where they both studied law under Professor Joseph Cotton Mather. Anna eventually traveled to America with her husband and they settled down in what would become known as "the Oaks". They soon started out farming land which they grew into large plantations using slave labor including their own children who worked on their farms alongside their slaves until around 1830 when abolitionism made slavery illegal across most of North America (except for Texas). From this time onward,Anna operated her plantation herself while her son-in-law ran the household affairs until his death in 1865 when Anna passed away also aged 85 years old leaving behind an extensive estate totaling over $2 million USD today! John did not live long enough to see his dream come true however his wife did – she started raising children herself after moving back stateside with them shortly after arriving here (she would continue doing so until her death aged 96 years old). Over time these kids would grow up into some incredible women – many becoming successful lawyers themselves! One such woman was Elizabeth Stoddard who attained national prominence as one of fewer female attorneys appointed by President Abraham Lincoln himself during his tenure as US Attorney General (a position she held from 1861-1865). Another key figure associated with Oak Forrest during this time frame was Drancy Jourdan whose pharmacy became one of the largest local businesses within town limits before later closing due to competition from larger chains like Sears & Roebuck etc.. Following John & Anna's death in 1847 there were several other families that moved into what would become known as "the Oaks" including those from neighboring Chicago Heights/Albany Hills which increased population growth rates resulting ultimately in annexing much more land than either John or Anna could possibly have imagined! Finally after decades of effort by various civic groups including TheOldTownePeople Organization Inc., Hometown Heritage Committee et al., following annexation proceedings initiated by then Mayor Richard J Daley circa 1978; all property lines were finally drawn establishing definitive boundaries between what used to be "Oak Forrest" proper (now part of Albany Hills) while still maintaining some vestiges thereof such as street names etc.; making this once tiny community actually quite sizeable compared to most places within Cook County today!
