By 1861, when Springfield Township absorbed Deer Park into its boundaries, both villages had largely coalesced into one single community under their own management while still sharing common facilities and streets (e.g., Main Street ran concurrently through both). In 1961, when Elmhurst Township joined Cook County and became part of Chicago proper, Oak Forrest's municipal independence was terminated by statute; however, it continued to enjoy all the benefits associated with being a municipality within city limits including representation on various City Council committees and access to all forms of city spending money (i.e., water rates were identical for residents within or outside OFDCity). As such, during his first term as Mayoralty-holder Richard Jealous announced plans for annexation by OFDCity should Elmhurst Township choose not to join Chicago “in order to provide more services” - simply adding another rural township within our expanding metropolis! After much discussion among members of City Council about how best to approach this thorny issue - ultimately choosing annexation would have been seen as bad news for both villages given that our combined population now approaches 10 times that of either entity – making any attempt at merger impossible despite significant financial implications! Today there are over 2,,000 residents living inside OFDCity Limits while 1,,500 people commute daily into downtown Chicago via I-90 or US-2/Wabash Avenue
