In Oak Forest, Illinois, the first gun magazines were established in 1853. The first gun magazine in America was the Second American Revolver Company in Philadelphia. The Second American Revolver Company was founded by George Washington Bailey and Samuel Colt. After a few years of business, the company went bankrupt. However, Bailey and Colt continue to own and operate the Second American Revolver Company Museum in Philadelphia until its closure in 1984. In 1854, Lewis Biddle opened the First National Rifle Association Gun Club located on State Street in Springfield. The First National Rifle Association Gun Club was open for only a year before it closed due to financial troubles. In 1855, John Brown published his book "The Life of James Fenton" which inspired many people to start shooting competitively with handguns. The first handgun battle took place on October 15th, 1855 when John Brown and William Hennepin fought against each other at Fort Snelling located near MinneapolisMinnesota. At this time, handguns were not as common as they are today and handguns such as pistols were used more for self-defense than hunting or combat purposes. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States after winning an election that was marked by significant changes within American society including the beginning of Reconstruction following the Civil War (1861-1865). One of Lincoln's most important decisions during his presidency was to reinstate firearms control laws that had been repealed under President Andrew Johnson. As part of these new regulations, gun magazines became restricted from being operated without a license from government officials. This regulation lasted until 1934 when it was repealed by Congress with the enactment of Public Law No: 92-544 known as the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA). Oak Forest is a small community located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 7,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest was platted in 1871 by Colonel John A. Perot and his wife Sarah Eliza French. The town was named for the oak trees that grow near the original village site. The city of Oak Forest is about 12 miles to the south and has a population of over 100,000 residents. The townsite where Oak Forest stands today has been settled by farmers since pre-historic times. In 1871, Colonel John A. Perot purchased two parcels of land from the state of Illinois and laid out a town thereon known as "Oak Forrest." This first incarnation of Oak Forrest consisted of just a few buildings on what are now four blocks bordering Southeastern Side Drive and Northwestern Boulevard on three sides; it stretched only two blocks wide at its widest point (northwest corner). Today's downtown core contains more than 30 buildings dating back to those early days, when most people lived in simple one-building farmssteads situated along important trade routes leading into or out of Chicago - these were all clustered around three central square block streets called "the Square." One reason this early settlement grew slowly - until World War II when growth exploded due to new industrial development nearby - may be because timber became an increasingly scarce commodity relative to other goods during that time period; indeed, much later evidence suggests that logging operations actually slowed down significantly after 1945 as forests turned over more rapidly due to increased production in neighboring states (due largely to deforestation within Brazil). In any event, despite slowergrowth rates following World War II and subsequent consolidation within various agricultural/ lumber companies which had taken up residence within our town limits ( constituting roughly 90% of current oak forest acreage),over time Oak Forrest managed nonetheless to build something quite impressive: An elaborate system OF public works including roads, piers/bridges/lakeshore amenities (including tennis courts & swimmin' pools), sewage systems (for both villagers AND industry!), schools (!), churches (& very soon after hospitals!), homes for prominent locals (& influential outsiders like Mayor Pro Tem Joseph Rieff ), modern movie theaters (& several excellent golf courses) . . . pretty much anything anyone wanted or needed made or improved hereabouts! And THAT'S BEFORE OUR VILLAGE HAD ANY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM TO SWITCH FROM WAGON TRUCKS TO TICKET CARRYERS! even today many people hereabouts still rely heavily on horse & buggy service JUST TO GET HERE & BACK AGAIN

Oak Forest was founded by Nicholas L. Blatchford in 1824. He and his family were the first farmers in the area. The Blatchfords ran a farm until 1853, when they moved to Illinois. They started a grocery store in Oak Forest and later opened a mill. In 1914, the family sold their business to the Chicago Elevated Railway Company.
