Oak Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 3,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest is located in the southern suburbs of Chicago and has a rich history dating back to 1849 when it was part of Rockford Township. In that year, John Pemberton bought 640 acres (24 km2) of land near what is now Oak Forest from the federal government for $1 million. He named his new township after one of his sons, who had been killed in an Indian raid near Rockford two years earlier. Because Oak Forest lay within Cook County boundaries at the time, Pemberton also donated land to the county for public use – including a large parkland called "The Park". The first courthouse and jail were built here between 1851 and 1853; both were replaced by more recent structures in 1935 and 1940 respectively. In 1881, Oak Forrest became one of thirty-six townships in Cook County when it was created from parts of Rockford Township and other townships around Chicago. That same year saw its first annexation by neighboring Evanston – although Evanston never annexed any other township outright until 1955. In 1907, Oak Forrest incorporated as a village under Section 2(a) of the Illinois Constitution; but this incorporation did not take place until 1912 because no zoning laws then existed pertaining to villages or municipalities. One reason why this took so long may have been due to problems with getting approval from local property owners – many of whom were Republican Party voters who didn't want their municipality overlapped by Democratic strongholds on either side of Michigan Avenue/North Side). The village's first mayor was Jules Ahern (1912-1920), who served concurrently as village president (1921-1927). Ahern was succeeded by Homan Ziegler (1928-1935), followed by Edward Condon (1936-1945). During World War II,Oak Forest served as headquarters for United States Army Radio Service station WBWR–FM (881 kHz). In addition, they also saw limited use in ground warfare due to their high cost and potentially dangerousields; however, they remain central elements in manygunnery exercises today
