Oak Forest is located on the right bank of the Fox River and has a large parkland area with ponds, woods, and a few homes. The town was founded in 1837 by Peter Nourse as an agricultural community on land that had been granted to him by his ancestor John Nourse. The name "Oak Forest" first appeared on a map made in 1845. In 1830, Nathan McCormick bought 9 acres of what is now Oak Forest from John Nourse for $2 per acre. In 1847, George Washington Smith donated 2 acres of land to the town for use as a school district boundary. In 1850, Isaac Morse donated 5 acres of land to the town for use as a public square. In 1853, Augustus Kelley donated 4 more acres to the town for use as a public square and courthouse square. In 1861–1862, Elijah Hicks donated 3 more acres to the town for use as farmland and lots near downtown (now known as North Side). In 1865–1866 James Hargrave donated 10 additional acres tothetownforuseasalldowntownpropertyandahospitalfordevelopment.(Nowknown asto beHomesquad.) From this donation came what is now Elmwood Park across from Northwestern University in Evanston Township on Lake Michigan Drive NW., which became home to Oak Forrest High School until it merged with nearby Morton Grove in 1997. Oak Forrest's first post office opened in 1849 when mail was sent from Chicago via boat across the river into Westchester County through Salem Township and then north into Cook County through Naperville Township before being delivered here daily by wagons across Pioneer Road into our present day village boundaries! Mr Alfred Ives served as Postmaster here until 1863 when he moved upriver with his family to Darien (Davenport) where he continued post business affairs until his death some years later! Indeed it would be unnecessary hereto recount many interesting events connected with this early pioneer period during which much progress was made both physically and intellectually within Appleton’s limits; indeed one could list off such items without endangering either party concerned!

At that time, most of Cook County was landlocked and there were no roads or railways until after World War II when Chicago began expanding its boundaries northward. Oak Forrest became a village on July 1, 1892, following an election held to approve the merger of two adjacent villages – Northfield and Thornhill – into one village. The vote followed a proposal from Village President Reuben Hines to consolidate functions within the new village so that services could be better coordinated for residents. In 1915, Mayor John Fennelly established an emergency fund which was used to provide relief during World War I and subsequent wars. This fund has continued to be used today to support local charities including those providing disaster relief such asHurricane Katrina victims and Illinois wildfires . Oak Forest was first settled in 1814 by the Kaskaskia people. The village was named after a large oak tree that stood near the original landing site. The first school in Oak Forest was built in 1825 and the first post office opened in 1827. The village became a town in 1895 and received its own hospital, firehall, library, and jail in 1907. In 1916, Oak Forest became one of eight townships within the new Illinois State School District.
