Oak Forest is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest was founded in 1857 by General David Dixon and his wife Anna Lathrop Dixon as a small farming community on the southern edge of what is now Elmhurst, Illinois. Dixon's brother-in-law John Pritzker bought land for the village and built its first schoolhouse in 1859. The village grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to heavy demand for agricultural land around Elmhurst and other villages near it because of new railroads being constructed in that region. The Oak Forest School District was organized in 1903 and became one of the largest school districts in Illinois. He instead chose to retire and handed over control of the city government to his assistant mayors until 1917 when Fenton again sought election and won again with more than 60% of the vote. After Fenton's death, an election campaign ensued where candidates including his widow Jane Fenton (a close friend of his) ran against her husband's choice for mayor - incumbent Edward Schieffer - but were unable to gain an advantage over Schieffer despite spending heavily on advertising. In 1850, Nancy died leaving John with three girls- Lillie, Addie, and May- to take care of their farmstead. Lillie became the first woman to graduate from college in the United States when she received her degree in 1872 at Northwestern University. Addie married lawyer Lucius Quesnay in 1876; they had two children before he died in 1915. May married James Hinton in 1880; they had four children before he died in 1944. After Lillie's death, James took on the role of town clerk until his death in 1951. Since then, Oak Forest has been led by its first female mayor (1976–1981), its first African American mayor (2002–2005), its first female representative from an Illinois congressional district (2007–2011), its second female representative from an Illinois congressional district (2012–2015), and its first female senator from Illinois (2017).

Oak Forest was a small village located in Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1848 by John H. Oak and his wife, Sarah A. Oak. The village had a population of about 150 people when it was established. It declined in the late 19th century, however, due to numerous factors such as the Panic of 1893 and the construction of railways that bypassed the village. In 1955, Oak Forest merged with nearby Arlington Heights to form a new village called Arlington Heights-Oak Forest.
