Oak Forest was founded in 1838 by Pieter de Jonge and his wife, the widow of a Dutchman who died in Illinois. The De Jonges were from Holland and had come to America to farm. They started out near Joliet, Illinois, but soon moved to Oak Forest because it was more spacious and profitable. In 1856, John Fenton bought the farm from the De Jonges and made it into an agricultural research station. He named it after his friend Sir Francis Bacon, one of England's most important scientists. The early settlers of Oak Forest were farmers who did not have much money so they relied on their land for sustenance rather than manufactured goods like clothes or tools. This reliance led to some difficult times for Oak Forrest during the early years of its existence. For example, when railroads came through Oak Forrest, people needed goods that could be transported quickly so they began producing lumber instead of farming products. However, this change also led to a surge in production because people now had something other than food to sell! Over time, however, things changed for Oak Forrest when technology arrived. For instance, electricity became available in the late 1800s which allowed farmers to produce crops while still having access to power without having to build anything special or rely on outside sources like natural gas or waterpower! This change led directly to increased production as well as better profits for the farmers at Oak Forrest!
Oak Forest was founded in 1837 by Ebenezer Oak and his wife, Sarah. The original home of the Oak family is still standing, and it is now a museum. The town grew rapidly after it was established, and by 1850, Oak Forest had a population of over 100 people. In 1864, the town became an incorporated community with a government that consisted of a mayor and six council members. In 1903, the town was renamed to Elmhurst after its founder's father-in-law, Elijah Elmhurst.
