Oak Forest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Oak Forest comes from the oak tree that grows there. The first settler in what is now Oak Forest was James Fenton, who came to the area in 1836. He built a cabin on the banks of an oxbow lake and named it Fenton's Grove. In 1847, another pioneer, David Hull, arrived and founded Hull's Corners with his brother-in-law John Swartzwelder. In 1851, Edmund Burnett settled in what is now Oak Forest and named it after his youngest daughter Augusta Burnett (1819-1890). In 1872, Augustus Kelley bought land east of present day North Elm Street in what is now Oak Forest from David Hull for $2 per acre. He developed this land into what is today known as Kelley Place Park. In 1907–09, local entrepreneur George Wernick purchased 1/4 acre of land at the northwest corner of Western Avenue and Kedzie Road from August Kelley for $1 per year to be used as a horse pasture and later as a playground for children living near Kedzie Road and Western Avenue. Wernick renamed his property "Oak Forrest". In 1916–17 when World War I beganWWI erupted across Europe hundreds of miles away Americans were mobilized to serve their country through patriotic service programs such as the National Defense Service Act which offered exemptions from income tax for citizens who served in military units abroad or on submarines or airplanes deemed vital to US national security; these men often had little possibility of returning home before hostilities ended so they could receive their full paychecks plus benefits including free housing and food stamps while waiting for relief supplies to arrive (the war officially ended on November 11th 1918). Many people living near Oak Forrest took advantage of this Neutral Zone because they lacked any other means to support themselves during wartime aside from selling crops orchards or hunting game like deer or hogs that were subject to confiscation by Germans during wartime times whereas Americans were not required to do any such thing since they were technically “citizens” under law- until after Pearl Harbor American citizens were able to export all manner of goods regardless if it stayed within boundaries set by Japan without fear thereof . So when Japanese forces invaded America on December 7th 1941 most residents along with many animals inside residential areas like those around North Elm Street went about their daily lives until suddenly all noise stopped abruptly due unknown gunmen storming into residences simply looking for individuals deemed hostile thereby ending everyday life quite abruptly leaving families& pet’s stranded indoors & wondering where things went wrong . Oak Forest was a small village located in the town of Oak Forest, Illinois. The Village was founded in 1871 and it served as the local government for the town until it was discontinued in 1951. The Village had a population of approximately 100 people at its peak. The Village was first established on land that is now part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It began as a small farmstead and grew to include a few buildings and about twenty residents. In 1871, the village board voted to move from its original location in what is now eastbound I-65 to present day westbound I-465. The new site would be nearer to Champaign, making it easier for residents to get around and making it more likely that they would stay there. The village continued to grow through the years, becoming an important community with various businesses and services available including grocery stores, post office, library, doctor’s office, etc. By 1951, however, when Oak Forest ceased operations due to budget cuts within the local government system, all but one building had been destroyed or converted into apartments or other uses. Despite this setback, Oak Forest has continued to serve as an important cultural and economic center for Champaign County since its establishment over seventy years ago. Today there are numerous organizations headquartered in or associated with Oak Forrest including: American Legion Post #8181; Champaign County Historical Society; Cook County Sheriff’s Department substation 5; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Champaign Park District #2; Elmhurst Elementary School District ( demolished ); Stroudsburg Area Chamber of Commerce ; Masonic Temple No 4 ; United Methodist Church .
Oak Forest was founded in 1833 by John and Susanna Oak. The oak tree was the original property for the town. The first post office opened in 1835, and the first store opened in 1836. In 1840, a school was built, and the first public road was constructed. A courthouse was built in 1865, and a jail opened in 1870. In 1902, Oak Forest became a city.
