The village of Oak Forest was established in 1857 by commissioners who were sent from Decatur to investigate land grants given to Quaker women by General David Dixon. The commissioners developed a plan for the village and named it after a grove of oak trees on their way back from their trip. In 1865, the first post office opened in Oak forest with three mail handlers and one clerk serving a population of just over fifty people. In 1867, Oak Forest became one of six towns within Cook County when it was created as an independent county under state constitution No. 22. On November 3, 1907, Mayor John Fenton dedicated the new park that would become home to Soldier Field during his first term as mayor. At that time Soldier Field had only been built two years previous and was still unfinished at its original site on Addison Street between Wabash Avenue and North Kimball Avenue across from what is now River North High School. Located on property where present-day Northwestern University stands today (and which also includes most of downtown Chicago), Soldier Field originally consisted of only a football field measuring about 100 yards long by 50 yards wide with a running track around it dating back to 1875 while other parts were still being constructed such as offices and houses for the city's earliest soccer team known as "The Pirates" which played its games at Elmhurst Park northeast of downtown before becoming known as Goodman Stadium in 1911). The first game ever played at Soldier Field took place on October 6th vs visiting Stroudsburg native George Gillett with Dan Darragh punting for Chicago won 9-6 thanks largely to goals by Don Meredith (2) and Jimmy McCarthy (1). On November 3rd following Mayor Fenton's dedication speech, Music Hall Opera House staged America's First World War Memorial Parade including troops from all over Illinois along with floats made up largely of local businesses looking nice but not too shabby considering they were living paycheck to paycheck just months earlier! Today much has changed since then including somePDATED constructionEngineering has taken care West Side Road leading into Soldier Field will be renamed Midway Road once final funding comes through due to multiple projects surrounding that street alone!
