Oak Forest is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,811 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Cook County after Chicago. Oak Forest is located on the north side of Chicago and borders Hinsdale to the east, Mount Prospect to the west and Lake View Terrace to the south. The first European settlers in what is now Oak Forest were farmers who arrived in 1812 from Holland. They named their land "Oak Forest" after an oak tree that they saw near their farmstead on State Road 3 south of present-day Oak Park. In 1837, Abraham Lincoln was born here and spent his early years here before moving to Washington D.C., where he pursued his POLITICAL career. In 1861 when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of America, he traveled back east and attended a meeting at which John Pemberton offered him a job as superintendent of Indian Affairs for Illinois if he would run for office as a Democrat against John C Grundy (the incumbent). Lincoln agreed and won easily despite some controversy surrounding his private life at this time; most notably after reports surfaced that while living in Maryland he had several sexual encounters with women such as one known as "the White House Slave". After leaving office in 1865, Lincoln moved back to Illinois and began work on what would become his famous Emancipation Proclamation which helped end slavery in America by Union troops during the American Civil War. Afterward, he settled permanently into Oak Forest where he died three years later on April 12,1865 aged 63 years old. In addition to Mr. Lincoln's remains resting within Elmwood Cemetery there are also five busts or plaques honoring other notable residents of Oak Forrest: two representing Mrs."Lincoln's First Lady", Anna Muhlenberg Goode (1830-1902), father-in-law James Buchanan (1792-1868) & wife Elizabeth Kieft (1796-1860); four representing General George Armstrong Custer (1815-1904), Samuel Phillips Chase (1825-1900), Edwin Booth (1863 - 1948) & wife Virginia Woolf Boothroyd Coffin( 1871 - 1962);and two represent Milton Sills Jr.(1914-) & wife Nellie Mae Wiley(1945-) both educators
