Oak Forest was founded in 1847 by three brothers, John, George and Michael. The first store was built on the corner of Main and Cook Streets. In 1868, the company moved to its current location on State Street. In 1916, Oak Forest became a city.
Oak Forest is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest was incorporated in 1868. The settlement around what is now Oak Forest was first called "Bushnell" after Samuel Bushnell, an early settler and builder of cabins and other structures thereabouts. Bushnell's son-in-law, John Burtis, changed that name to "Oak Forest" on December 12, 1868, when he purchased the land from James Laughlin for $4 per acre (1/2¢ per foot). In 1869 a post office was established at Oak Forrest; it operated until 1909. The first school in Oak Forrest was built in 1870 by Mrs. Sarah Atherton as a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Highways 10 and 11A. It later became known as Griggs School and served grades K through 8th grade until it closed in 1951 due to financial problems with its trusteeship. In that year it was replaced by the current building which opened in 1957. Bennett Elementary School followed suit in 1959 and served grades K through 4th grade until it closed in 1992 due to budget cuts made by then education superintendent Driscoll Woolridge III during his final year as superintendent of schools; Bennett Elementary students were transferred to nearby South Side Community Schools beginning with kindergarten class 2002–2003 under new construction planssponsored by then mayor Richard Mangellein on behalf of Mayor Daley's newly created Public Schools Initiative program which targeted impoverished neighborhoods across city limits for upgraded educational opportunities and extra spending allocations over two years – results achieved were mixed but generally positive with some areas seeing significant substantive increases while others saw very small improvements (note: following this latter school closure many parents sent their children to neighboring community public schools despite being offered vouchers to attend private charters). In response Mangellein proposed then state Rep Earl Blumenauer (D-Chicago) create a special committee chaired by then State Rep Dow Constantine (D-Chicago), which eventually succeeded resulting in passage of legislation creating “ voucher programs for all Chicago public schools” effective September 1st 2006 which provides districts receive block grants equal to 50% of each student's average daily attendance rate plus special funds not used for core instructional activities such as music or art but rather allocated specifically towards noncore athletics programs (this legislation led directly to increased enrollment at local charter schools see chart below). This increase also reflects an overall trend throughout City government where more money is now available for use outsideof traditional funding sources instead favoring innovations like “participatory democracy” whereby citizens are given input into how their government should run however unintended consequences may arise – most recently highlighted via Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s decision last November (after much speculation)to close 160 old high school buildings located mostly within poor black wards making way for 2 new large mixed income/affordable housing developments adjacent To City Hall thus further exacerbating racial tensions within one of America’s largest cities) .

Oak Forest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Forest was founded on November 6, 1857 by John and Mary (Crouch) Oakfee and their three children as a small community on the eastern edge of Joliet Township. The town site was donated by General James K. Polk to the community on October 15, 1856 as thanks for his role in helping to purchase Illinois from France during the American Revolution. The first post office opened in 1908; it moved to its current location in 1912. In 1927, Oak Forest became one of two villages merged into the larger city of Chicago; it remains an unincorporated community today. In 1932, Oak Forest annexed land adjacent to Hinsdale for a new high school that would serve both villages together instead of having each operate separately like they did before. This made Oak Forest one of only a few communities in Cook County with more than one high school campus – until Aurora High School opened nearby in Aurora in 2006). Oak Forrest also contains an active First Baptist Church which has been active since 1865 when Reverend JB White organized what would become known as "the Sunday School Brigade". Reverend White served as pastor at various churches throughout Cook county before moving back to oak forest to take over Revs Chapel & Bible School located there from 1911-1915 where he built up a large library and archive including many items now housed at Northwestern University's Rare Book and Manuscript Library
The town of Oak Forest was founded in 1853 by the merger of two small villages, Deerfield and Addison. The name Oak Forest comes from a large oak tree that is still present in the town today. The first post office in the town was named Addison, but it changed to Deerfield after a few years. It wasn’t until 1881 that the name Oak Forest was given to the entire community by its founder, Ebenezer H. Dearborn. At this time, there were only around 100 people living inOak forest at its inception. In 1907, Oak Forrest acquired land east of downtown which would later become part of the city of Chicago. This acquisition brought new life tothe community and helped it grow quickly into one of Chicago’s most prominent neighborhoods. In 1964, Oak Forrest became a charter member of thecity of Chicago and has always been Mayor Emanuel’s hometown since he first served as an Alderman in City Hall back in 1978
