Oak Forest is a town in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. As of the 2010 census, Oak Forest contained 418 businesses and had a total payroll of $2.1 million. The town dates back to 1847 when Captain John Patton purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land from Josiah Gregg for $5 per acre. In 1852 Patton donated another tract of land to the town for use as a public school which was built on what is now Main Street. In 1859 Patton donated an additional tract of land to the town for development as homeowning acres that still remain in use today. As Ammo Manufacturing began operations in Oak Forest in 1910 it quickly became one of the leading companies in the industry with its own plant and production president who managed everything from powder kegs to bullets and shells. By 1943 Ammo Manufacturing had closed its doors but not before leaving a lasting legacy on this small community by establishing major local industries such as paper making, shoe manufacturing, textiles and more which continue until present day

Oak Forest is located on the extreme eastern edge of the village and has a border with Elmhurst to its south. The Village of Oak Forest was founded in 1855 as a post office called "Fenton." In 1857, it became known as "Oak Forest." On February 20, 1871, it became a town under the name "Oak Forrest." On November 3rd of that year, it changed its name to "Oak ForestVillage" after being approved by the state legislature. In 1930, when all but two of DuPage County's villages were given their own townships within the new county system, Oak Forest was among them. The only exception was Elmhurst which remained an incorporated city until 1959. On April 15th of that year (following approval by referendum), Oak Forrest Village passed a resolution requesting annexation by Elmhurst City due to population growth and economic development in nearby parts of Elmhurst Township since annexation requests had been falling on short notice due to changing legislative boundaries. The vote lasted for three hours and resulted in over 60% support from residents who wanted their village annexed into Elmhurst City rather than remaining isolated within DuPage County. Since then - growing evidence suggests - annexation requests have become more common from citizens looking for closer access to jobs in downtown Chicago or other areas outside their villages walls; however no attempt has been made by either party to bring annexation forward despite repeated pleas from both sets of residents
