The first people to live in what is now Oak Forest were the Cockerills, who settled there in 1868 after moving from Kentucky. John Cockerill had been born in 1798 and died at age 82 years old on July 10, 1908; his wife Martha (née Cleveland) Cockerill lived to be 102 years old. The other founder of Oak Forest was Isaac Newton Keepnews, who arrived there around 1840. In 1892, a post office called "Cooksville" was established within the boundaries of present-day Oak Forest; it ceased operations on October 15, 1928., However, Cooksville residents continued to use the post office name until their town's incorporation into Oak Forrest on April 11, 1991 Oak Forrest was organized as a village on April 11, 1991; its first mayor was Edwin Daley and its first treasurer was Carol Weidemann. At that time it had a population of just over 1,000 people and consisted only of those living within its own boundaries: Cooksville residents continued to use the post office name until their town's incorporation into Oak Forrest When oak forest incorporated as a village it changed its name to "OakForest." This change may have been made because many villagers felt they resembled “the trees” more than “the forest” which might have been seen as less patriotic or patriotic-sounding According to the 2010 census data there are 1,391 residents living within our limits (Cooksville residents continue to use post office name). Many residents served in the military, some rose through the ranks to achieve great things, and many more held technical positions within their communities during wartime. Postwar growth has led to increased competition for limited resources, which has caused some challenges for Oak Forest residents over the years including plans for an expressway through their community; concerns about possible job loss associated with new industry development; and zoning changes resulting in reduced access to open space within walking distance of most homes
