Northlake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,433 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northlake is southwest of Chicago on the border of Lake Michigan and Will County. The village was organized in 1837 as a result of land that had been granted to Alexander McNaught by General George Armstrong Custer for his services during the Wisconsin War of 1848. The Village was named for Rear Admiral David Davenport Northlake who served as Commandant-in-Chief of the Naval Brigade under Commodore John Fenton on board USS Constitution during the War. The first school in Northlake opened in 1838 and operated for one year before being closed due to lack of students or money. A new school building was built in 1841 which still stands today. In 1850, a post office called "Northville" was established in what is now Northlake and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1908. In 1865, Elisha Rockefeller donated land south of present day Northlake Boulevard to make way for a new high school which would serve students from all over north suburban Cook County as well as downtown Chicago; this site would become known as Rockefeller Park Today's elementary schools are located at that location:northridge (1911),northbrook (1912),northwest (1973), northwest Side Academy (1982) and Roosevelt High School (2002). In 1916, Northwestern Mutual moved their corporate headquarters from near Riverdale to north lake shore along Wacker Drive making room for their new campus which included an auditorium/theater, library/school gymnasiums, housing units and other associated structures including a 200-meter pool courts complex - all within what is now known as Northwestern Mutual Park adjacent to Lake Shore Drive across from McCormick Place stadium - home of USA Hockey's National Hockey League'sChicago Blackhawks since 1926! In 1922, when two branches off University Avenue were established side by side - one serving South Holland and Tinley Park while the other served Elmhurst and Winnetka - both schools were renamed after prominent people associated with those communities: Northwestern Mutual Building became Northwestern University Ave.; Elisha Rockefeller Blvd./University Ave./South Holland Rd./Tinley Park Rd./Elmhurst Rd./Winnetka Rd.(now Homan St.) became University Dr.(now State Street)); Harbormaster Dr.(now Kedzie Blvd.) became Hullman Ave.(now Randolph Road)). And Stephenson Way became Wortham Ave.(now Lincoln Highway)). All these changes occurred despite strong opposition from community activists who felt they were taking away too much property from residents without giving back anything in return such as better education or jobs opportunities for locals. Despite these protests however, many people settled into their new neighborhoods throughout the next several decades thanks largely to generous donations by individuals like Rockefeller himself or businesses such as Northern Rock Wire & Cable Company Inc., Armour Electronics Inc., DuPont Co., National Broadcasting Corporation Inc., American Motors Corp.. etc.). In 1954 when Interstate 90 bypassed north central Cook County and created an area east of Prospect Heights called Northwest Side – much like today's Northwest Side neighborhood – Northlake began slowly but surely growing again thanks to its proximity to downtown Chicago; businesses started moving back into town such as JCPenney(1963), Sears Roebuck & Co(1968), KFC(1969), Ford Motor Co.(1970) etc.; meanwhile homes were bought west of present day Nixon Road by businessmen like Abe Pollack or Harry Stoneking who developed areas such as Woodlawn Shopping Center(1976)), South Loop Shopping Center(1978)), Near West Side Shopping Center(1981)), Rushmore Place(1984)), Oakland Hills ShoppingCenter(1986)) etc.; finally becoming majority African American populated beginning with nearby Englewood Cliffs Shopping Center following Barry Goldwater’s victory over Lyndon Johnson in 1964.......................................Today much of what once made up northcentral Cook County Functional Neighborhoods has become either part or total suburbs suchas Evanston Township with its large annexed city center[1], Arlington Heights with its rich history dating back to glowworms[2], Kimball Woods with its beautiful rolling hills[3], Crystal Lake Estates with its upscale architecture[4].....NorthLake currently has less than 2% minority population so long term inhabitants have no real say about how their community functions................................. Today there are more than 50 restaurants inside 5 miles radiusof most major shopping centers including gritty Midtown Terminal just westof Addison Stsewhere you can find ethnic food items like Ethiopian coffee,[5] Somali chinese takeout,[6] Ghanaian BBQ joints galore,[7],[8],[9],[10] Indianand Polishrestaurants dotted around western halfCook county... yet very few African Americans live here.......................It should be noted that while some businesses have closed down completely due not having enough customers leave because they don't fit within certain demographics anymore rather than faceing racism head on [11],[12]), others have managed to keep going despite fierce competition...... overall though things could use some improvement given how residential fabric has clearly changed more times then bad news Mary Berry [*] As early settlers pushed through wild lands lying between Indiana Lakeshore on the northwest corner connecting Lake Michigan basin with Canadian provinces far below Ottawa Valley—the Quapaw Nation—and Black Hawk Flats on Door Peninsula extending southeastward almost unto Mackinac Island—they discovered rich bottomland soils averaging about eight feet depth where water lay six feet deep covering bogs three hundred yards wide at medium tide avg width eighteen inches at high tide covered only by soft sand duneocks twelve feet high rising out abruptly above water 200 yards wide forming banks running northeast/southwest substratum consisting mostly limestone bedrock underlying layer Pembina clayey loam substrate sandstone bedrock consist mainly feldspathoid shale platform 22 inch thick fluvial sandstone overlayting layers oldest clastic rock strata exposed younger Mississippian clastic rocks exposed sands laid down horizontally overlying mudstones ages ago probably Late Jurassic period252 IlllinoisI
