Northlake, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 50,691 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Cook County and the county's largest community of African American descent. Northlake is also one of the few cities in Cook County with a Hispanic majority. The area that now makes up Northlake was first settled by German immigrants in 1847 as part of what is now West Side Chicago. They named their settlement "Chicago." In 1871, when Northwestern Electric Railway extended its line from Chicago to Rockford, Illinois, the company chose to build a station on the east side of town instead of on Waveland Lake because it would be closer to Rockford's steel mills and other businesses. The name "Northlake" was chosen for its similarity to Chicago's north side. In 1896, Northlake began issuing its own currency - the "Northlake Narrow Gauge Token."
