In 1865 Abraham Lincoln moved into what would become Northlake when he bought 1,000 acres (500 hectares) northeast of present-day town center from John Saylor for $5 per acre ($50 worth then). He began growing corn on this property which became one of the early successful maize crops grown in central Illinois; it continues to be an important part of the local diet today. Northlake is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Northlake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1872 by Captain John A. Ladd and his wife Eliza Wigglesworth as a small farming community northeast of Chicago on the South Side of the city. It became an incorporated town in 1903, and again became a village in 1910. The name "Northlake" comes from its original location near Lake Michigan on the edge of what is now North Park District. On July 5, 1888, Ladd donated land to form North Park which included much of what is today Northlake Village and portions of Gage Park and Skokie Heights. In 1896, he gift-renounced any right to keep use or occupancy for himself or any other person owning property within his gift until further notice without compensation from anyone else who may have benefited thereby from that donation including future residents or owners thereof; this provision remains in effect to this day with some exceptions granted through legislation (e.g., through annexation by neighboring municipalities). In 1912 it was reported that all but one family living within a half mile radius had left for greener pastures due to low prices for farmland around Chicago during prohibition; however according to local historian James Pritchard most residents moved away before prohibition ended on April 15th 1922 when law enforcement began rounding up dealers and moving them into concentration camps known as "the black sites." It should be noted that many people who left after prohibition never returned as prices for farmland had increased greatly since then even if they did not move away because they could not find good land anymore or were too poor to afford it because prohibition had destroyed so much wealth across America regardless of race etc.; instead they simply relocated elsewhere outside of Cook County either into DuPage County IL where alcohol sales were unlimited prior to repeal OR into Kane County KS which later became Illinois due tobraska annexation).
