Northlake is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 569 at the 2010 census. Northlake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Northlake was organized on October 1, 1868 from portions of the towns of Rome and Downers Grove. At its incorporation, it had a population of about 350 people. In 1951, when Northlake's annexation by neighbouring Arlington Heights took effect, its population reached 621 residents. In 2007, it had grown to 801 residents. Northlake has one school - North Lake Middle School - which serves students in grades K-8th. It also has a library with over 100 books and an internet café/store which opened in fall 2006. There are also two businesses located in the village: A & J Poultry and American Weighing & Shipping Co.. American Weighing & Shipping Co., established in 1865 as The National scales Company specialising in weighing goods for export, became one of the first large commercial businesses in Chicago after World War II with an extended reach into what is now Illinois (it still does business as American Weighing & Shipping). It closed its doors for good on November 30th 2017 due to economic conditions

Northlake, Illinois is a city in the northern Illinois metropolitan area. The population was 32,913 at the 2010 census. Northlake is located on the banks of the Kankakee River. The first European settlers in what is now Northlake were French explorers who explored and charted the river in 1779-1780. They named their new town after Jean Baptiste Point du Lac, Sieur de La Salle's assistant on his voyage to explore Lake Michigan in 1785. In 1818, General Jesse Wilson founded the village of Kankakee on land that he bought from John Jacob Astor for $1,500. On December 12, 1819, General Wilson issued a proclamation naming Northlake "the place where I have established my headquarters." In 1830, Northlake became part of Peoria County when it was created from parts of Vermilion and Winfield counties. When Peoria County was merged into Cook County in 1896, Northlake remained within Cook County and became one of its six townships. As part of Cook County's merger with Indiana in 1912, Northlake became one of the five townships within Chicago City Limits which were annexed by the city of Chicago. As a result of this annexation process, much local government activity took place inside Chicago City Limits rather than outside it as had been common before. The town of Northlake was founded in 1838 by George M. Shearer and his wife, Ann. The first post office in the community was established in 1843. In 1848, the Northlake Academy was founded and remains one of the most popular schools in the area today. In 1865, a railroad station was built in Northlake and became an important transportation hub for the community. By 1907, Northlake had a population of over 1,500 people. During World War II, Northlake played a key role as an wartime munitions manufacturing center with its production of aircraft parts and other war-related products. After the war, much of the once- thriving town declined until it regained popularity in the 2000s as a bedroom community for Chicagoans commuting to work or live near downtown.
