Northlake is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Northlake is located on the west side of the village of North Lake, between Midway Road and State Route 30. The population was 511 as of the 2010 census. It has been a small farming community for most of its history. The first settler in what is now Northlake was James Hickey who platted the area in 1837. By 1860, there were only 10 settlers living in the town site. By 1870, Northlake had a post office and two churches. In 1876, the first school opened in town and it remained open until 1952 when it closed due to low enrollment; however, it reopened under new ownership in 1984 and still operates today as a private school with six classrooms and a staff of 25 students up to grade 8th). In 1907, railroad construction began through Northlake proper and by 1913 residents had built new homes on lots within walking distance of their old businesses. The north-south railroad crossing near present day Midway Road was rebuilt around this time with tracks running parallel to each other just south of where they currently meet at State Route 30 (the current stoplight). When service was discontinued from Chicago to Stonington via that route in 1951, many people abandoned their properties along that stretch because they could no longer get food or water deliveries from Chicago anymore. Northlake, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northlake was first settled in 1837 by John Ladd and his son-in-law William Hilliard. The name may come from the Ojibwe word "northern" or "northwest". In 1839, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in America in nearby Downers Grove. Northlake became a town on April 1, 1847. Its post office was established on July 10 of that year. On May 2nd of that year, George Stephenson's engine No. 6 derailed while crossing the street near Main Street and North Avenue; it took three days for local volunteers to clean up the scene and re-build the tracks between Elmhurst and Northlake (this was also reported as being one of Stephenson's most famous exploits). On November 7th 1890, an express train carrying General Harrison's campaign materials derailed at Northlake station; all but two passengers were lost including Harrison himself who sustained serious injuries along with many other people on board including then Mayor Edward Everett Burnham and Congressman Samuel Inslee. This derailment helped lead to Harrison becoming President of America during his Presidential Election Campaign against Grover Cleveland In 1944 Northlake High School renamed itself Northwestern Illinois State University after reaching an agreement with then Governor Nelson Rockefeller which gave northern Illinois statehood within the United States as well as Educational assistance to university students from north central Illinois as well as east central Indiana In 1957 Northwestern Illinois State University voted unanimously to change its name back to Northern Illinois State University effective January 1st 1958
