Between 1921 and 1929, the average family size increased from 3 to 4 members because of new housing developments started by local businessmen such as Harry Hargrave and Raymond Teller. During this time period also saw an increase in employment opportunities as well as growth in community services such as libraries and parks. In 1933, World War II began with America's entry into war; factories closed throughout the United States but northern Illinois businesses remained open due to wartime production shortages (a common problem during wartime). As a result of the war effort, many people lost their jobs but also experienced an influx of refugees into the community including many Jews who had fled Nazi Germany prior towar declaration without any legal rights whatsoever. This caused tension among some residents which would continue until after Adolph Hitler's rise to power during World War II when most Germans within Cook County were relocated or killed by his forces following his assumption of power across Europe
Northlake, Illinois was founded in 1868 by a group of men from the town of Northlake, Indiana. The town was named for General George Rogers Clark, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first settlers in Northlake were farmers and their families, who built homes on small plots of land they managed. In 1871, the first school was opened in Northlake. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and by 1882 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1884, Northlake became a city and began to develop into a major center for trade and industry. Many important businesses were established here including the Galesburg Carriage Company, the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, and United States Steel Corporation. In 1908, NorthLake became one of the towns in Cook County that joined together to form the Chicago metropolitan area. During World War II, Northlake played an important role as an industrial center within Cook County. many factories were located here such as GE Aircraft plants (now Boeing), Raytheon Missile plants (now Raytheon), and Kaiser Aluminum Plants (now Alcoa). Although NorthLake has experienced some economic setbacks during recent years (most notably due to falling real estate prices), it remains an important community within Cook County. It is home to many cultural events such as summer festivals and art shows both large-scale productions like Shakespeare's Globe Festival or smaller workshops like ceramics or potterymaking.
