A post office called Northlake was established in 1836, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1861, John Kennedy and his brother Joe were elected president of the United States and John F Kennedy became governor of Illinois; both men lived near Northlake at Hyannis Port during their terms as official residents of Illinois. In 1964, while campaigning for reelection to his third term as president, John F Kennedy visited Hyannis Port and made an appearance at Grassy Knoll Park where he spoke about issues related to education reform then under consideration by Congress including night classes offered through television stations like WGN-TV (Channel 7) . In this speech JFK mentioned that "northLake [sic] has long been one of my favorite places because you can see all those great things happening here – night classes through TV stations; businesses growing up; young families coming together". He went on to say that if he could go back there “I would take more courses than ever before” adding that “Grassy Knoll Park provides a perfect setting for these talks because I heard what they’re doing right here – we have cameras around every inch of this park so you can see everything." This visit marked perhaps JFK's most visible endorsement yet of network programming over traditional print media when he discussed new ways to reach Americans living far away from major urban areas

That year also saw the opening of Northlake's first post office which had been located in an old school house on Main Street since 1875. In 1930-1931, improvements were made to the Kankakee River Bridge which connected northbound Village with southbound Addison Township; this bridge still stands today and is used by vehicles travelling between villages during rush hours only
