Northlake was founded on November 1, 1877 by George W. North and his wife Anna Belle North as a town in section 21 of the Town of Oak Park. The university has since grown rapidly with over 60 buildings erected on more than 2 hectares (4 acres). The first building opened in 1960 with classrooms, science laboratories and a library inside what is now north end Stadium which hosted USA Men's Olympic Hockey Tournament games from 1972-1977 The University agreed to sell its sports arena for $325 million to developer Bruce Ratner in 1997 after years of wrangling over how much money they would pay him for it while still maintaining use rights for Northwestern athletes until 2019 when Ratner sold them back to Northwestern for an undisclosed fee

Northlake is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. Northlake is bordered by Forest Park to the northwest and north, Arlington Heights to the east, Grayslake to the southeast, and Westmont to the southwest. It lies on the east side of Lake Michigan. The village was founded in 1876 by Alfred P. North from what is now Dearborn Heights on land donated by his brother-in-law John Neely Bryan. At first it consisted of just a few homes and businesses. By 1880 there were over 100 residents living in Northlake Village. Northlake's growth continued as more people relocated here during Chicago's heyday as a manufacturing center during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1915, Northwestern Illinois Normal University (now Northwestern State University) moved into its new campus in what is now Northlake Village – one of several colleges that would eventually form Northwestern Illinois University (NIU). This addition not only made NorthLake one of the most developed villages in Cook County but also led to an increase in business activity as businesses around town began to compete with those at NUI. During World War II many local companies produced materials for military production such as tanks and airplanes; some factories closed after the war while others thrived thanks to Allied munitions contracts that kept them open past 1945. After V-E Day 1945 many plants closed due to lack of demand or redevelopment but two - Alcoa aluminum smelters and Koppers Rubber Company - remain active today through their subsidiary brands Alcoa Aluminum Products Inc., Koppers Rubber Products Inc., both located within walking distance of each other across I-94 from downtown Chicago proper
