The town's growth continued through the mid-19th century until it reached its peak during World War I when it became an important shipping point for munitions delivered to Europe by sea. Afterward, Northlake slowly declined as businesses closed their doors or moved away due to changing business conditions in downtown Chicago or elsewhere in the metropolitan area; however, some residents kept active in their community until recently. During recent decades there has been renewed interest in reviveing aspects of local history including restoration of old buildings and hosting events specifically related to that history like Fourth Sunday Artisans Market & Sale featuring artisans from all over town on Sundays throughout October (www.northlakeilinois2012). This resurgence has led to increased visitation by people who were not previously interested in visiting this historically significant community; however, much work still needs to be done before NorthLake can become an attractive destination for tourists or families alike again!
