Northlake is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, Northlake had a population of 8,657. The Village was organized in 1887 and named for General George Washington North (1785-1859), who served as Mayor of Chicago from 1892 to 1896. The first settler in what became Northlake was Abram Kapp, who built his house on the east side of present day State Street in 1889. A few years later Abel Jameson purchased land on the west side and erected a log cabin. By 1893 there were nine homes in the village and it consisted of a scattering of adobe buildings on some eighty acres ( thirty hectares). The first school was established in 1895 by Mrs. Anna Ladd and her five children under the name "Bellefontaine School". In 1902 Mrs. Jethro Fenton donated four acres ( one hectare) for a new school building which opened its doors that fall with instruction by Drs John Witherspoon and Isabella Payne pupilteachers. The following year another parcel was donated for use as an addition to the original structure by Mr. Harry Hahnfeldt which housed both classrooms and playground until 1951 when it became known as "Koeniglich Hall" after Alfred Koenig (1868-1953), President Franklin D Roosevelt's personal physician during World War II who attended many White House events at that time also living near Northlake Villagespotting its potential as an agricultural center he offered to donate land on Park Ridge Avenue adjoining his home so that it could become an agricultural college town subject to his endowed trust; this offer was accepted and Parkridge Avenue became Koeniglich Halls Campus campus serving Agriculture students from Northeastern Illinois universities until 1966 when Northwestern University moved into their current facility adjacent to La Salle High School while Chiessen College closed its doors within Northlake Village proper resulting in Northlake becoming self-contained withnorth lake Drive running through it bisecting it from east to west while Parkridge Ave remains one big street thruoutvillage
