An ammunition historian in Northlake, Illinois, has put together a comprehensive history of the town's ammunition manufacturing and trade. The paper covers the years 1874-1974. In 1874, John A. Schieffelin opened a muzzleloader store in Northlake on State Street. He soon became well known for his quality firearms products, and he introduced various new calibers of firearms to the townspeople. His store also served as an important source of ammo for local farmers and hunters. The first rifle cartridge made in Northlake was the .22 LR Winchester High Power bullet. It was developed by George Warren at his Winchester Ammunition plant in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1888, Schieffelin sold his business to A C Brown & Sons of Stonington, Connecticut for $25,000 dollars ($ million today). At this time, ammo production began at The Browning Company's factory in Stonington with the introduction of the first 12 gauge shotgun round in 1889 (the 3in Magnum). Beginning around 1900-1910,Northlake experienced a period of growth with major munitions manufacturers like Remington Arms Corporation (now Remington Outdoor) opening their facilities here including Camp Perry Armory which produced M1 Garands and other rifles; Federal Ammunition Manufacturing Co.; Alcoa Ammo Plant producing high explosives munitions like dynamite; G&W Machine Guns Factory making machineguns using 7mm Mauser rounds; Ford Motor Company developing an armored car turret using 5x57mm Schofield rounds; Bethlehem Steel Corporation putting together artillery pieces from multiple types of ammunition including 1st Lieutenant General Edwin Esmond’s 9 Pounder Model American Artillery Round used against Confederate forces at Pea Ridge Battlefield on April 6th 1865 Ultimately these companies brought about a significant increase in ammo production throughout Cook County until World War II when there were only a few remaining producers left by 1945

The first post office opened in 1872. The name "Northlake" was chosen because it sounded like “the north fork of Lake Michigan” according to one source (Goudreau). Northlake has been continuously governed by a Village Council since 1898. In that year, South Holland's incorporation as a village also put an end to Village Council governance within Northlake. The current mayor is Marty Ziegler who took office on January 1st, 2019

Northlake, Illinois was founded in 1836 by John North and his wife Sarah. The town became a railway junction in the early 1800s and prospered as a center for transportation. In the late 1800s, Northlake became a lumber town and sawmill town. The industry ended around 1930, but Northlake has remained an agricultural community with a large dairy herd since that time. John North's descendants still live in the town and are active in its civic life. A local history museum is open to the public during regular hours and offers displays on local history as well as Northlake's role in railroad development.
Northlake was founded in 1881 by James Robertson and John Hirsch. The town was named for Northlake, Illinois, a small community near the town of Westville. Northlake grew rapidly due to its location on the railroad and timber industry. In 1923, the town charter was amended to create a mayor-council form of government. In 1957, Northlake opened its first high school which became the nucleus of what is now University High School. In 1978, Northlake consolidated with nearby Westville and became a single municipality again. In 1994, Northlake began annexing adjacent communities including Swede Heights and Point Defiance Village in order to increase population density and build more housing developments. Today, North Lake is known for its sprawling gardens, upscale shopping (including several department stores), and eclectic architecture styles such as Arts & Crafts bungalows and Victorian homes.
