Northbrook is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northbrook is home to Northwestern University and the Park Ridge neighborhood. The village of Northbrook was located on the north side of Chicago until it became part of the city in 1887 and then again when it merged with South Side Chicago in 1904. In 1906, Northbrook became an independent municipality with a population of 2,500 individuals. The village had two post offices—Northbrook on State Street and Northbrook Village on Forest Avenue—and one school—Northbrook High School. In 1922, Cook County approved plans for a new courthouse to be built on Roosevelt Road east of Route 606 in what would become Park Ridge. On November 3, 1922, voters passed a $1 million bond issue to build the new courthouse and parkway system which included land for the current community of Northbrook as well as 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of right-of-way for future streets along Roosevelt Road east from I-294 near west eldorado Cemetery. The first building opened in 1924; the second opened in 1928; and the third was completed in 1929). The fourth and final building was completed in 1935 and served as county hall until its closure in 1978 due to budget cuts by then Governor Ronald Reagan (who later became president). When Northwestern University moved into their original buildings across from Soldier Field after World War II, they needed more space than could be found within Northbrook's boundaries so they leased or bought some adjacent land that currently forms Park Ridge Boulevard across from NU’s campus today. In 1949 Drury Lane developed between NU’s campus and Boulevard which still houses many residences today while also serving as vehicular access highway into Northwestern’s Loop Campus providing students with easy access to all that Northwestern has to offer without having to trek through downtown Chicago or leave their neighborhoods! As Northwestern expanded beyond their initial borders into other schools such as DePaul University (now Xavier University), Marquette University (now Milwaukee Polytechnic Institute),UIUC (formerly Urbana-Champaign), Loyola Marymount University (now Loyola Marymount UniversityChicago) etc., demand grew exponentially for additional housing opportunities within walking distance from each school campuses making Northbrooke one of “The Villages” becoming synonymous with high quality suburban living closer to major urban areas! Northbrook was founded in 1847 by Isaac North and his wife, Sarah. It is a small town located in the northwest corner of Illinois. Northbrook was named for two hills in the town, Northbrook Hill and South Park Hill. The first post office in Northbrook was established in 1851. After being located on the same square block as present day Northbrook for many years, it moved to its current location on State Street in 1907. The population of Northbrook decreased from over 1,000 people during the 1860s to only about 100 people by 1880; however, it increased rapidly from around 400 people by 1890 to over 1,200 people by 1910 due to new additions to the town including the north side of Chicago and other businesses moving into the area. In 1925, Northbrook became an incorporated city with a Mayor-Council form of government which remains in use today. Northbrook has been known for many noteworthy citizens including: Isaac Newton North (1809-1892), John Haywood (1795-1867), Augustus Kelley (1826-1914), George Pullman (1860-1935), Harry Emerson Whitehead (1855-1937), Julius Rosenwald (1863-1945), Harry Truman (1945-1953) and Eleanor Roosevelt (1913-2008). Other notable achievements include becoming one of America's smallest cities with a population under 10,000 residents through annexing nearby communities such as Downers Grove and Elmhurst; becoming one of Illinois' original "rust belt" towns that experienced rapid growth following World War II; hosting both the 1984 Summer Olympics and 2008 Winter Olympics; being chosen as host city for both United States Olympic Committee’sexpo “Illinois 2030” which took place from July 20 - 25th at McCormick Place Arena; having several high school sports programs become NCAA Division I schools such as Northwestern University Wildcats football team who moved from Evanston IL to Northbrook after playing their inaugural season there in 1922; also having been home to Rockford IceHawks ice hockey team who are now based out of Bloomington IN since 1973. In addition to its noted history, some other famous things that have happened or will happen withinNorthbrook include: KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders visiting town during his promotional tour throughout Illinois back in 1954 when he donated $5 million towards building a new restaurant inside what is now known as KFC Plaza adjacent to Interstate 80 near where present day Route 66 meets Interstate 95; former President Barack Obama making an appearance during his campaign rally here on November 4th BBQing with local business owners before taking part in a rally outside at UIC Pavilion later that night along with then Governor Rod Blagojevich etc.; finalist for Best Place To Live award three times consecutively from 2007 - 2011 held by Forbes magazine
