Northbrook is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,206 at the 2010 census. Northbrook is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the communities of West Pullman to the south and east, Glenview to the north, Lemont to the northwest and Archer City to the northwest and west. The town was founded by John H. North in 1871 as a small community on what is now State Street near Schiller Road. North ran a general store and post office there until 1884 when he sold all his holdings to John Wirth. The first school in Northbrook was built in 1872 with $5 from John Wirth's parents. In 1889, William Davenport donated land for a public library which became one of the largest libraries in Chicagoland after being established in 1886 by Mayor George Stephenson. In 1907, Northbrook annexed part of neighboring West Pullman which had been created as a subdivision of Chicago Heights following an annexation referendum that year. That annexation led to increased traffic and development around what is now Northbrook while also providing more housing options for residents within walking distance of shops and services that were once unavailable or difficult to find outside of downtown Chicago or other major cities during those days. In 1921, after years of planning by local officials and developers, Northbrook incorporated as a village under municipal law then known as "Community Consolidation Act". This legislation allowed municipalities with populations over 5 000 people (northwest Chicago) along with townships (southwestern Cook County) within their borders to join together into single municipalities – with only property values not changing – provided they adopted similar policies such as zoning laws governing commercial properties within each new municipality boundaries while retaining their own independent fire protection system, police force and other essential services. A second annexation referendum took place in 1936 resulting in the addition of nearby Lemont making it into its own municipality than would have otherwise been possible had Community Consolidation Act not been passed that year automatically joining any villages located adjacent thereto without any vote or notification from either party involved; this act remains controversial among historians due to allegations that political considerations were played factor into how Lemont chose to annex itself rather than remaining separate from its larger neighbor despite having less population density (.50 persons per acre compared to .90 persons per acre for Cook County).
