Northbrook is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,816 at the 2010 census. Northbrook is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin Combined Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Northbrook were Quakers who came from Pennsylvania in 1795. They built a small town near present-day Northbrook on land that they granted to a group of soldiers who had fought for independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution. After America's victory over Great Britain, the General Court awarded this land to these soldiers as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended hostilities between America and Great Britain. In 1802, John Davenport erected a log cabin on what is now Davenport Road, just east of present-day Northbrook. This was followed by others until by 1835 there were three buildings on what are now Plantation Drive: Mrs. Burt's House, Mr. White's House and flour millinery store run by Mrs. Browning (now demolished). In 1836 Colonel John Dodge purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) north ofpresent-dayNorthbrookfrom Mr. Kline for $1 per acre (0·07 sq mi). He donated this land to Illinois State Normal School which became Northwestern University in 1847 when Illinois became a state within the United States under President James Kellar Grant's Morrill Act legislation passed during his presidency.). In 1870 Northwestern University established its law school at Northbrook; it remains one of Illinois' leading law schools today (). In 1907 Drury College opened its doors at what is now Northwest Side High School.; it merged with Northwestern University after World War II and continues as an independent college today (). Northbrook has been home to many famous people including basketball player Julius Erving (), baseball players Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams (), filmmakers Mel Brooks () and Hal Ashby (); singer/songwriter Neil Young (); author Stephen King (); former US president George H W Bush (); professional golfer Tiger Woods (); several NBA teams including The Bulls () and The Pistons (). The current mayor of Northbrook is Lisa Madigan ().
