Northbrook was founded on November 4, 1868 by George W. Backus and his wife Lizzie. It became a municipality on December 1, 1870. The first mayor of Northbrook was James Fenton. On July 1, 1914 the town achieved city status with the passage of an act by the Illinois General Assembly that granted city status to towns with a population of 25 or more who had submitted a petition to the government for such designation. The town has experienced many changes over its history including being annexed by Chicago in 1934 and then again by Cook County in 1955; becoming an independent school district; becoming part of Rockford Township in 1978; becoming a component of Hoffman Estates after that township merged with Chicago; and finally joining the City of Chicago as a result of annexation on April 8, 2018.
