Northbrook, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in the Chicago metropolitan area after Chicago itself. Northbrook is located on the north side of Lake Michigan and has a long history as an agricultural center and bedroom community forChicago. Northbrook's nickname "The City of Lakes" comes from its location on five large lakes: Michigan, Huron, Erie Canal, Fox River, and South Branch of the Chicago River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Northbrook were French traders in 1673. They named the area "Northeast Township," but it was renamed "Northbrook" by David Rittenhouse in 1847 when he became governor of Illinois Territory. In 1868 Potawatomi Indians destroyed most of a town built by Peter Schuyler near modern day Northbrook; this event served as a catalyst for Northwestern farmers to settle around Northbrook and begin development as a dry farming community with irrigation systems that would become world-renowned today. In 1892 settlement began at what is now Northwest Side Avenue and Western Avenue NW (now Cicero Avenue NE), just east of present day Northwestern University campus; this was followed by settlements to the south along Cicero Avenue over time until alluvial soils were exhausted between 1899-1902 making way for developed areas today including Schaumburg Village (northwest corner of Northwest Side Ave., south side of West Side Ave.), Midtown Heights (southwest corner of Arlington Heights Boulevard & Hoyt Road), Lincoln Park East (east side of Archer Rd., northwest corner of Kedzie Ave.), Bronzeville (northern edgeof Evanston Rd.), etc.–the entire area being known as “Northbrook” today due to its proximity to Northwestern University/Cicero Campus/Lake Michigan shoreline.). NorthBrook had one school district until 1911 when it merged with another school district forming “Cook County School District No 2” which still exists within Cook County government today
Northbrook was platted in 1835 and became a town in 1847. The first post office was established in Northbrook in 1845. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to North Chicago to honor Mayor Nicholas J. Kelly.
