John Atherton laid out streets and built homes in what is now Northbrook, including one known as Atherton Road. The first post office was established in 1841, but it was moved to its current location in 1865 after Congress passed an act providing for postal service within Cook County. In 1892 when George Washingburn purchased 160 acres (60 hectares) of forested land east of Northbrook from John Fenton, his heirs developed this land into a large commercial district with shopping centers, schools and other amenities that continues today as northwest Side neighborhoods like Roscoe Village and Woodlawn station along State Street between Austin Avenue and Addison Avenue include many homes dating back to this time period

The name comes from a grove of oak trees near the original village site that still stands today. Northbrook's economy has been largely based on agriculture for most of its history and manufacturing now only provides support for about 2 percent of the municipality's populace; however some light industries do exist such as aluminum production and printing presses historically used to print T-shirts for local businesses in Northbrook and other nearby towns during the late 1800s/early 1900s
