Northbrook is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,501 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the Chicago metropolitan area after Chicago. Northbrook has been called "The Jewel of Chicagoland" and "The Gateway to the Midwest." The area around Northbrook was first settled by Native Americans in 1837. The town was founded on December 10, 1881 by George W. Norris as a farmstead named Northbrook Heights. On May 24, 1895, it became one of twelve townships in Cook County that were organized from part of the old Village of Cicero. In 1902, Northbrook Heights incorporated as a municipality and changed its name to Northbrook on November 3rd with an population of 907 residents. In 1911–12 and 1916–17, North Brook won two bids for what would become Park Ridge – then one of Illinois' three congressional districts – because voting restrictions had been put into place following the American Civil War which left most white working class people living in cities while African American men continued to be registered and vote at rates much higher than their female counterparts. On October 15th 1870 (the Feast day of St John Baptist) Abraham Lincoln gave his inaugural address from Mount Rushmore National Monument northwest of Springfield IL., which can still be seen today: "It is my earnest hope that this fair land will so long furnish forth many a happy family; that through Its fertility our children may see themselves brought up with all due respect; that here they may learn self-reliance and toil for their country instead of receiving training under masters who look down upon them as inferiors." Later during his term Lincoln made speeches about improving education opportunities for blacks within US society: "I have no intention either now or hereafter ever to interfere with local school systems run by pious parents anxious to fill their children's every need... I am not alone among those who care for this question; throughout America are scores—perhaps hundreds—of friends willingPersonally I do not feel bound thereby either politically or socially to take any position whatever on educational questions between territories controlled by different states respectively."
Northbrook was founded in 1868 by George and Mary Northbrook. The couple purchased 1,000 acres of land on the north side of the Illinois River. They named their community Northbrook after their family home in England. The Northbrook School District was organized in 1903. In 1961, Northbrook became a city.
