Northbrook is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,865 at the 2010 census. Northbrook is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northbrook is bordered by Grand Lake to the north and west, Mount Prospect to the south and east, and Deerfield to the southeast. The first European settlers in what is now Northbrook were French Canadians who arrived in 1763. A fur traders' settlement was established in 1803 by Pierre Lacroix and his brother-in-law Jean Baptiste Chouteau. The town's name comes from a stream that ran through it called "Norther Brook". In 1837, Northbrook was incorporated as a village; it became an unincorporated community on December 15, 1959. On April 7, 1907, as part of an agricultural experiment led by then-Mayor George Bird Dunn (D), Northbrook began receiving electric power from General Electric Company's new West Side powerhouse located at 95th Street and Pulaski Road. On November 6, 1946—the day after World War II ended—Northbrook opened its locally sourced Fresh produce market which served as a model for later grocery stores throughout Cook County including those that are now Nordstrom Rack locations or Sam's Club warehouses across Chicago’s city limits. It remains one of only two markets nationally still open with live human beings selling fruits & vegetables direct from growers/manufacturers - this practice continues today! In 1964–1965 approximately $1 million dollars was invested into economic development within the Village of NorthBrook with plans for industrial expansion & retail development taking place along State Route 3 (Wabash Avenue) . However due to low demand for such businesses there wasn't much progress made until new Mayor Dick Slatkin revived interest in these plans when he purchased 10 acres adjacent to Wabash Avenue & developed it into what eventually became Northwest Crossing shopping center which anchored by Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy’s Inc., Target Corp., Applebee’s Restaurants Inc., etcetera making it one of Illinois’ most vibrant shopping destinations today!

After the war ended, efforts began to rebuild both economy and infrastructure* but this proved difficult given that most Ofal hostilities had taken place outside of Illinois*.
