Northbrook is a small town in central Illinois that was founded in 1847. Northbrook is located on the north bank of the Chicago River, about 20 miles east of downtown Chicago. The population of Northbrook was 2,542 at the 2010 census. Northbrook is part of the DuPage County, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Northbrook was John Gurney who arrived in 1847 and settled on a tract of land now known as Gurney Township. George Hinkle also settled in this area around this time and built a cabin near present-day Northbrook Elementary School. In 1851, Jno. Atherton purchased 640 acres (2 km²) from Nicholas Bemis for $500 cash and donated it to the township as a land donation with an understanding that it would be used for public school purposes only. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln visited Northbrook while he was campaigning for President and spoke to residents about opportunities available to those living within his district including farming potential on his new Harrison Purchase Farm just east of town. After Lincoln's election victory, he signed legislation creating Du Page County and giving its county seat to Northbrook which became one of the early centers of community life within DuPage County. In 1895, voters approved construction of the first major commercial building in what would becomeNorthbrook when they passed an ordinance authorizing the erection of a store by Elias Howe & Son limited liability company with plans to open shop May 1st (the date remains etched into local history). That same year saw also another significant milestone when Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company opened its doors after acquiring some property adjoining Howe's grocery store site across from present-day Northwestern Memorial Hospital across from current day Chatsworth Middle School (northwest corner of Dearborn Road/Rte 8). From 1896 until 1959,Norman Cramer served as president and CEO of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company operationally located adjacent to today's Northwestern Memorial Hospital campus at 113 E Michigan Avenue (northwest cornerof Dearborn Road/Rte 8). Northbrook, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Northbrook was platted on November 3, 1869 by George Washington Carver and James H. Carver as part of a land grant to their father from President Abraham Lincoln. The town's name likely comes from "north" because it lay north of the Kimball Line between Iowa and Illinois; and "brook" because the stream running through its center ran south-southwest. Northbrook's first store opened in 1870. Northbrook's post office moved to its present location in 1895. One reason for the growth of Northbrook was that it became one of the few townships in Cook County without an incorporated governmental organization when it was created on November 3, 1869. This left the town with a number of different self-government organizations including two school districts (one serving black children and one white), two churches (Anglican and Lutheran), three grocery stores/cafeterias (one Italianate, one Germanic Revival), six businesses (four men’s stores, four women’s stores, two agricultural stores), five schools (grades K-12th public Schools; Stonington School District #2; Rockford Union High School; South Side High School; and West Side High School) as well as a number of private homes which were used by these organizations or their members until they were disbanded or converted into apartments or other uses around World War II. In 1907 Northbrook had also acquired what is now known as Park Boulevard which ran east-west through town limits then turned northwest towards Deerfield Beach after intersecting Northwestern Road near paralleling Lake Shore Drive before terminating at State Street just southeast of downtown where it merged with Dutchwood Road becoming part of Interstate 95 traveling through business areas such as Irving Park until reaching Oak Lawn where traffic slowed down for a stoplight before continuing northeast along Cicero Avenue past North Brookhaven Rd., becoming Addison Road before ending at Devon Ave., just south of Addison Mills Mall open to vehicular traffic only days later on October 1st 1909 In 1922 when Cook County was divided into judicial districts within which each district contained certain townships those township residents who could not vote within their own district were given votes instead within each judicial district for representatives on various committees associated with that district such as county board meetings On December 5th 1923 all Townships except Addison Mills & parts annexed by Deerfield Beach Township
