Ford and his wife Sarah A. Lyon as a farming community on the north side of Chicago. Northbrook experienced rapid growth after World War II, thanks to its location near Midwestern manufacturing plants and its proximity to major highways.During the late 20th century, however, Northbrook's reputation for good schools and safe neighborhoods began to decline; crime rates increased in many parts of the town while economic opportunities diminished. In recent years, however, Northbrook has made some progress towards revival with initiatives such as new housing development and investments in education and economic development. The town of Northbrook was settled by European immigrants from Hungary and other eastern Europe who arrived during the early 1800s looking for land grants or business opportunities in what is now Cook County. At first, most of these settlers were farmers who worked their land until it became available for cultivation again; later immigrants started businesses such as buggies or livery horses for transportation around Chicago. In 1848, General John P., one of America's earliest military commanders during the American Revolution (1775-1783), bought 1/4 acre (0.2 km²) of land west of present day Northwestern Avenue just south of Kedzie Street from Joshua Reynolds (a member of Parliament from Ireland). This property would become known as Ford Place because it lay near where General John P.'s father had purchased a tract two years earlier also within this area bounded by Michigan Avenue on the east side and State Street on the west side – both now part of Northwestern University’s Park District.–Ford’s purchase marked an important milestone in downtownChicago’s history because it meant that developers could build large blocks adjacent to each other without fear that they would be competing with each other.– Ford moved his family into this home soon after its purchase which he called “Belle Isle” due to its striking appearance when seen from Belle Isle Lake across Kedzie Street.– Ford built several sheds on Belle Isle including one used as a jail during times when lawlessness prevailed among frontier farmers.– He also opened up land along current day Western Ave between Dearborn St./Kedzie St., today occupied by IKEA stores – this piece 3/4 mile long east-west strip running along present day Western Ave between Dearborn St./Kedzie St., today occupied by IKEA stores was donated to Northbrook Township authorities by Mr & Mrs Ladd about 1967.- From here he developed what became known as Ford Place Neighborhood which spanned portions north-south extending from Dearborn st./Kedzie st allthe way down westerly PIERCE avenue past IKEA store to WOODSIDE AVENUE where it ended.- Subsequently he acquired additional tracts over time becoming one of downtownChicago’s largest landowners - more than doubling his original holdings since moving into Belle Isle.(John P.)
