Northbrook is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,786 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northbrook was platted on November 1, 1871 by George H. Smith and named for Northbrook, England. The first settler to arrive in what is now Northbrook was James Waugh who came in 1872 from Liverpool, England with his family. Other early settlers included John Auld and his brother-in-law David Gentry (later a justice of the peace), as well as Isaac Asimov and his parents – Abraham and Sarah Asimov. As early as 1876, one of the first businesses in town was a grocery store operated by Jens Olsen which became an important factor in developing the community's economy. In 1908 Northbrook had two newspapers: "The Northbrook Times" and "The Daily Herald". The paper ceased publication in 1922 but continuing operations were conducted by the News-Gazette until it closed its doors for good on September 5th 1973. One of the most famous residents of Northbrook during its early years was Amos “Bunny” Easterling who owned a general store on East Green Street which continued to be open until 1924 when he sold it to Harry Sanger who renamed it “Easterling”s Grocery & Restaurant Ltd., still operating today as a popular restaurant within walking distance of many homes in town. Bunny Easterling also served as Mayor of Northbrook from 1923 to 1925; he is interred at Arlington Cemetery there together with other mayors from that time period including George Peebles (1926–27), Emanuel Cermak (1929–30), Art Rooney (1931–32), Charles Evans Hughes (1935–36) and Harold Washington (1937). In 1956 local resident Edna Gilmore opened her own convenience store called Maple Leaf General Store at 151st Street and First Avenue under the name Loretta's Place before closing it down some time later due to lack of success. During World War II much activity took place within the town limits thanks to member companies such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company which manufactured tires for military use; these activities led to additional development within town boundaries which can still be seen today especially around East Green Street where several dozen businesses are located adjacent to Northwestern Illinois University’s McCormick School Of Business Administration Building housing numerous research laboratories associated with this company dating back more than 50 years!

The town is located in the northwest corner of Cook County on the border of Lake Michigan and Indiana. The history of Northbrook can be traced back to 1833 when John North moved his family from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to what is now Northbrook after purchasing 4 acres (1 hectare) of land there. For many years the town was known as "Johnstown," named for John North's father-in-law who had died in 1802. In 1840 John Norseth erected the first store in town which served as both its legal until 1851 when it became part of the first post office established in Cook County. By 1850, over 50 businesses were operating within 2 miles (3 km) of Johnstown thanks to improved transportation connections made by Illinois Central Railroad Company (ICR). During the mid-19th century various mills were built around Johnstown including those operated by Pillsbury Brothers and Morton & Co.. During World War I production increased due to increased demand for munitions from both America and Great Britain; however following armistice negotiations factories closed down due to lack of business opportunities. However, following World War II growth resumed thanks to new manufacturing plants established in nearby Lombard Park and Aurora Heights neighborhoods while remaining residential until recently. Today Northbrook remains one of Illinois' most vibrant communities with a diverse range of businesses and residents enjoying high quality life choices including easy access to shopping malls and parks as well as excellent educational opportunities at local universities such as Northern Illinois University (NIU), Northwestern Chicago College (NBCC), Marquette University School Of Law or DePaul University’s McCormick School Of Business Administration.
