It is located on the north side of Chicago and about south of the University of Illinois campus. The village was founded in 1855 as a small farming community on the edge of what is now Northbrook Heights on a tract given to it by John Thornton. In 1865, when it became part of Cook County, Northbrook's boundaries were revised to include most of today's South Side; this gave it its current name and shape. In 1911, Northbrook built its first schoolhouse which still stands today as one of the village's most prominent landmarks. The Village Board purchased the property in 1922 and dedicated it to education with a new school building being built in 1928-29. From then until 1969, Northbrook had an elementary school (grades K-5), Middle School (6-8), and High School (9-12). The present high school opened in 1969 after years of planning and construction by local educators led by Superintendent George Wyneskeski and Mayor Richard Mangeli. The name "northbrook" was chosen because it is located near the parallel course of the north and south Rivers. The first store in Northbrook was built in 1872 by John Sayers. A post office was established at Northbrook in 1875, and remained open until it closed in 1940. In 1892, a school for boys was opened at Northbrook by Reverend Halsey Smith. That school operated until 1922 when it merged with South Side High School to form Northside High School. In 1951, a girls' school called Park Ridge Female Academy opened at Northbrook which continued to operate until 1973 when it merged with Park Ridge Male Academy to form Park Ridge Girls’ High School. In 1964, an agricultural high school called Glencoe Agricultural Institute opened at Northbrook which continues to operate today as Prairie View A&M University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In 1970, a retirement home called Deer Run Manor became available for purchase by the town of Northbrook and began operations as Deer Run Retirement Community LLC; that company ceased operations in 2013 after many years of operation。 In 1984, another retirement home called Woodland Hills Manor became available for purchase by the town ofNorthbrookelland began operations as Woodland Hills Manor LLC; that company ceased operations in 2017 after many years of operation。 Finally, in 2002 a new grocery store called ElkGrove Center opened at N 0 71 5 00 W which continues to operate today as Lakeview Grocery & Deli Inc.; that company ceased operations on May 10th 2018 after more than 20 years of business
