In 1924 Sears sold off its share of the paper business to Jiggs Paper Corporation which continued to make Christmas cards until it too went bankrupt in 1987. In recent years there has been an increase in development around Northbrook such as the opening of two new high schools – Northeastern High School (opened 2013) and Northwestern High School (opened 2014). There have also been plans to develop a mixed-use development called "the village" adjacent to the old site of the mills that are hoped to bring much needed economic vitality to Northbrook Village thereby increasing its population by up to 10 percent over time. Additionally, there has been development along State Route 20 near Interstate 90 into what is now known as "the township". This represents an effort by local developers interested in using land currently used for agriculture or serving as rural access routes for commuters into downtown Chicago instead of becoming suburban bedroom communities like Highland Park or Deerfield Beach while they remain undeveloped.
