Northbrook is the home of Northwestern University and two other universities, Chicago-Kent and DePaul. Northbrook is also the location of two large shopping malls, Sears and Kmart. Northbrook is one of eight cities in Cook County that are served by the Northwest Side bus rapid transit line. The settlement at what would become Northbrook was founded by farmers in 1855 as a small village on the north side of Chicago Ridge Road between Lake Shore Drive and Archer Road. The first post office was established in 1856; it was named after John Pierpontnorthover (1784-1865), an American Revolutionary War veteran who had been elected to Congress from Illinois as a Democrat. In 1870, streets were laid out within what became NorthBrook Village limits; this included present day suspicion Avenue (now Rupert Street). In 1876, construction began on Northwestern University's first building—the Collegiate Gothic Quadrangle—which still stands today on campus across from Gate House representatively of early university efforts to be self-reliant while still sharing resources with Kendall/Wickerham Hall on the north side of Chicago Ridge Road which would come to house some of UI's most iconic buildings such as Law School Tower and Illini Auditorium during the decades that followed including expansions into Park Row (later State Street) with its now demolished old college administration building known simply as "Old Main". It should also be noted that Northwestern University did not actually start operations until November 15th, 1865 when classes started for the fall semester under then President Abraham Lincoln having previously given tentative approval for instruction to begin September 1st but due to competing requests from other colleges were delayed until October 15th giving students plenty of time for Practical Training before they reported back to their homes or families during early winter conditions making this one of America's earliest university campuses In 1903–04 there was significant development when Northwestern built its first Divisional Headquarters Building – later renamed "DePauw" after former president Dr. James Croll De Pauw – which stood on South Dearborn Street adjacent to what is now McCormick Place Shopping Center today just below where Interstate 294 meets Interstate 55 today . Also during 1903–04 notable activity took place when new streets were opened within what became part of town limits including present day route 8 which runs along current day Sherman Drive between Cicero Avenue east and Western Avenue south becoming oneof only two arterial roads running through town limits becoming part OfNorthbrook's major retail districts During World War II many factories located in or around Northbrook produced military goods contributing significantly to local economies while residents raised money both locally and nationallyfor Pearl Harbor stay purposes as wellas helping support troops stationed overseas On November 9th 1950 following yearslong planning process vote was taken by City Council authorizing Mayor Wojciech Jaruzelskito build a Local Housing Authority housing project bounded by Roosevelt Roads southwest corner features modern day White Oaks subdivision off Roosevelt Rd .) resultingin completionof initialphaseon May 22nd 1951 with additional phases completed over ensuing years culminatingin fullopeningMay 25th 1957following incorporationof Northwest Side Community Development District subsequent thereto

In 1842, the town became the county seat of Cook County, Illinois. Northbrook continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 1940s, when the population was around 1,500 people. After World War II, the population decreased as jobs moved out of Northbrook and many residents left for other towns in Cook County. Today, Northbrook is a small village with a population of under 100 people.
