A group of Chicago businessmen formed The Chicago Portage Railroad (CTR) to build a railroad through north central Illinois from Chicago downriver to Moline and beyond via Rock Island Railroad tracks running parallel with those built by CTR's rival Union Pacific Railway (UP). This project would become known as The Great Northern railway line and play an important role in helping move people and goods between Chicago and various markets throughout northern Illinois during the 19th century – including parts of what are now Northwestern Illinois today – while also providing transportation links betweenChicago’s Loop neighborhood and points further south along the river valley outside what is now Northbrook township’s boundaries (see map). In 1860 only 2 residents lived in Northbrook; this decreased to 1 resident by 1870 due to increased farming activity outside of town and a decline in postal service availability due to new railroad construction nearby. In 1925 the Chicago Board of Trade gave impetus to development around town with the erection of several large warehouses which housed many local businesses including grocery stores and machine shops that were used for production purposes during the Great Depression years (1929-33). This period also saw a modest increase in population as people fledDepression-era economic conditions elsewhere or took up jobs available from expanding industry rather than stay put as their homes lost value during hard times (). Despite these efforts there was no significant growth until after World War II when Manufactured Productivity began surging rapidly thanks largely to better transportation infrastructure across America (). During this time growth occurred primarily through annexations by neighboring towns such as Burr Ridge (to the east) and Lockport (to the south), both of which experienced rapid growth following incorporation into larger municipalities along with others annexed during this time such as Hinsdale (to the west) and Streamwood (to the north). These annexations helped ensure that all but 2 out of 5 populated areas within Decatur County were incorporated at some point between 1871 and 1950 while leaving Northbrook without any annexations for nearly 60 years! After annexation came industrialization with heavy employment opportunities associated with newly constructed factories providing high rents for workers who could not find alternative housing or places to work closer to home ().
