Northbrook was founded in 1836, making it one of the earliest towns in the area. Ammunition production continued until around 1900, with most of it being used for artillery and other military purposes.
Northbrook is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northbrook is located on the north side of the Chicago River and has a total land area of 11 square miles (27 km2). The first Europeans to visit what is now Northbrook were French fur traders who traveled upstream from Lake Michigan in their canoes during the 18th century. The first permanent settler in what is now Northbrook was James K. Polk, who arrived in 1833 as an agent for the Peoria Land Company and purchased 640 acres (240 ha) around present-day Northbrook from John Kinzie for $10 per acre ($/ha). In 1836, General James Shields built his home on a parcel of land that he had acquired from Kinzie. Shields was one of the founders of DuPage County and served as its first sheriff from 1839 to 1840. In 1847, George Hinkle established a gristmill on current-day South Park Drive in what would become known as Hinkle's Corners and began manufacturing flour for local markets. Hinkle's Mill left behind an impressive legacy when it burned down in 1922; both its millstones still remain visible today within view of Northbrook Commons Shopping Center across South Park Drive from Hinkle's corners restaurant.. In 1865, John Ruggles opened a store at 901 Niles Road which became one of Illinois' most popular stores until 1955 when Sears closed its doors following World War II.. After being vacant for many years, Sears reopened inside the former Sears building on Lisle Avenue east of I- Highway after renovation which included new equipment and signage promoting Sears as "the last great American enterprise". In 1963, three sisters - Beverly," Betty" Wright and Kathy" Kozak - founded their own business called "Kathy's Kitchen". Kathy’s Kitchen quickly became one of Northwestern Illinois’ most successful small businesses with over 100 employees serving customers through four shifts seven days a week.. In 1984, Community Bank merged with First National Bank creating Peoples Trust Company which changed its name to Northern Trust Corporation two years later when Northern Trust acquired Peoples Life Insurance Company.. On November 3rd 1990 Northwest State Bank merger occurred resulting in creation OFW Bankshares Incorporated with assets totaling over $1 billion including assets under management (AUM) worth over $5 billion...On October 15th 2006 Northwest International Bancorp acquisition completed giving Northwest International Holding Corporation (NISHCO) majority ownership interest amounting to 45%...On December 10th 2006 Northwest International Bancorp announced they would be selling all their assets including 64 properties(northwestbankandshareholdingsincorporation) to PNC Financial Services Group plc effective January 1st 2007 Northbrook village plat map dated 1862

Northbrook is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Northbrook is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Northbrook was founded in 1887 by Rev. John Hynes and his wife, Sarah Norton Hynes (1860-1940), on land that had been donated to them by General George Buell. The first post office in Northbrook was established in 1889. In 1916, Northbrook became incorporated as a village. In 1960, the Village of Northbrook merged with the Town of Glenview to form the present day town of Northbrook. On January 1, 2003, portions of Glenview and South Glenview Township were annexed intoNorthbrook making it one municipality with a total population of over 380 people
