The first gun swivels were created out of metal tubing that was bent into an upside down L shape. To make it easier to use, they placed two lenses above each other so that the eye could see through them when looking down at the weapon. Additionally, they drilled a hole in the center of each lens so that the barrel could be rotated 360 degrees. They named their invention the "Dixon Gun Swivel." Despite its simplicity, the Dixon Gun Swivel quickly became popular with residents of North Chicago because it allowed them to easily access firearms while lying in bed or sitting at home safe from potential attackers. In addition, due to its design, it was difficult for thieves to steal either of the devices without knowing how to operate it properly. The Pistol Swivel also became extremely useful during wartime as many people stopped using handguns and started using rifles instead due to concerns about possible attacks by Nazi Germany or other Axis powers.
North Chicago, Illinois is a city in the northern suburbs of Chicago, commonly referred to as NorthChicago. The population was estimated at 73,763 in 2010, making it the third-largest city in the city proper and one of its five sister cities. The name "North Chicago" is thought to be derived from the fact that it was originally part of a large Indian village called “Northeast” which stretched from the now-defunct town of Palatine north to what is now Lincolnwood and vice versa. By 1868, however, all but about 4 miles (6 km) of Northeastern Indiana had been annexed by Chicago. In 1893, when Northwestern University moved to North Side for its new campus and established its original research laboratories there, Northwestern renamed itself North Central University. Chicagos first streetcar line reached North Side on October 1, 1903; this made possible an increasing number of grocers and businesses moving into the area because transportation became available for more people than could be reached by horse or buggy. By 1910 most residents were living on their farms east of Pulaski Road (now Eisenhower Boulevard). During World War II many factories were located in North Chicago including Ford Motor Company's Rouge Works (later Dearborn), Krupp AGs' Wegman's Kaffeehausen Works (now Harbin Hanford National Laboratory), and AIB Corporation's Niles Arsenal facility which produced incendiary munitions such as napalm. After 1945 many homes were demolished or converted into apartments due to lack of affordable housing; today only a few small businesses remain in downtown North Chicago while much larger blocks are vacant or rented out for high-end residential development. Despite this lack of progress over the years Northwest Side neighborhoods have seen increased gentrification with wealthier families moving into areas such as Lawndale and Roscoe Park while lower income families continue to live near baseball stadiums and other tourist attractions such as Michigan Avenue Bridgeview Park
