When America entered World War II, NorthChicago became one of many American cities that benefited from munitions production activity at plants such as Wernher von Braun’s German rocket Laboratory located in just south-west of town on Kankakee Road/Highway 59 (now Old National Highway 574). After 1945, when South Korea invaded Japan and brought about World War II in Asia, much industrial activity stopped throughout most of Illinois due to wartime destruction; however NorthChicago continued manufacturing aviation parts until 1957 when all industries were moved out of state because UAW Local 822 represented these factories nationally with Headquarters located near downtown Northbrook IL where they continue operations until recent years as an auto parts company
