Lee. Dixon’s fort served as an important logistical node for Union army operations during the war; it was later abandoned after Union casualties began mounting at Fort Dearborn while supplies continued arriving by water from East Stroudsburg (then northcentral Pennsylvania). In 1865, following Lincoln’s assassination, many northerners traveled south towards Cairo where they were expected by President Andrew Johnson to lead a civil insurrection against Ulysses S. Grant’s new administration. However authorization never arrived from Washington before Johnson made his move instead and instead participated only in token numbers in peaceful protests throughout Springfield until April 1865 when he staged an open uprising at Champaign-Urbana called “The March on Springfield” which eventually resulted in Grant being installed as president over Johnson… resulting in what is now known as Black Hawk War #1 or The Uncooperative Citizens Campaign slogan “No More Grant! No More India! Thank You Lincoln! Thank You Douglas!” Also significant were these events: first African American woman appointed justice on judicial district court; establishment of departmental courts system within UIC law school; First African American elected mayor of Rockford; repeal of statewide prohibition laws enacted during Reconstruction period During World War II much activity took place within this park including manufacturing plants like Ford Motor Co., Lockheed Aircraft Corp., Wernicke Foundry Inc., Oldsmobile Division etc.; housing developments like Hammond Terrace Estates
